KBS-'Sugar CCTV Misinformation' JTBC predicts severe disciplinary action..Korea Communications Standards Commission to deliberate quickly on the 19th

While KBS, a public broadcaster, apologized by organizing an opera 'Madam Butterfly' featuring Kimigayo and Kimono on National Liberation Day, the Korea Communications Standards Commission plans to impose heavy penalties.

According to the Korea Communications Standards Commission on the 18th (hereinafter referred to as the 「KBS Broadcasting Committee」), complaints about the broadcast of the Korean Opera Festival"Madame Butterfly" were received through KBS1"KBS Broadcasting Seat" which aired on the 15th, and the program will be designated as an agenda for rapid deliberation at a general meeting on the 19th.

If the Korea Broadcasting Commission designates it as an agenda for prompt deliberation tomorrow (19th), deliberation will begin in two weeks. According to the precedent, the Korea Communications Standards Commission is likely to impose heavy penalties beyond legal sanctions.

Earlier on August 15, the National Liberation Day, KBS aired 'The First Part of the Korean Opera Festival Puccini Butterfly' through KBS Broadcasting Seat'.

'Madame Butterfly' is an opera composed by Giacomo Puccini that premiered in 1904 and is set in Nagasaki, Japan, in the 1990s, when the United States forced Japan to open a port. This work, which tells the story of an American soldier Fingerton and Mrs. Butterfly who became a geisha, is dark in Japanese style, with the female protagonist appearing in kimono from start to finish, and the Japanese Kimi song melody is inserted in the wedding scene.

As soon as Liberation Day, viewers who listened to Kimigayo through public broadcasting and saw the characters wearing kimono poured out criticism toward public broadcasting KBS immediately after the broadcast, and the Korea Communications Standards Commission also received 28 complaints.

In response, KBS issued an official position and apologized even before a day passed.

On the same day, KBS announced on the 15th that it apologized for causing concern and disappointment to viewers in relation to the program 'KBS Broadcasting Seat', a broadcasting program for performing arts recordings.

The opera 'Madame Butterfly' is an Italian composer Puccini's work, depicting the tragic love between an American officer and a Japanese woman stationed in Japan, and Kimigayo, the U.S. national anthem and Japanese national anthem, will be played in the wedding scene of the protagonist and the man and woman in the play. The performance was recorded on June 29 and was originally scheduled to air at the end of July, but it was pushed back by the Olympic broadcast, and it was broadcast at dawn on Liberation Day.

Considering the changed schedule, we deeply apologize once again for causing a stir on the meaningful Liberation Day due to the production team's negligence to check whether there are any problems with the broadcast content and whether the timeliness is appropriate. To prevent this from happening again, we will pay more attention to the production by investigating the broadcast details and asking for reasonable responsibility", he apologized.

Nevertheless, KBS President Park Min apologized directly as viewers' criticism did not subside. President Park Min said, `When I took office in November last year, the most important part was that KBS's owner was the people, and that it should convey accurate information and knowledge to the people so that they could properly judge social issues and gain comfort through broadcasting. On behalf of the executive branch, I sincerely apologize to the people for causing discomfort to the people on a national important day.' At the same time, he announced that he would immediately launch a 'task force' to solve related problems and begin improving the system.

Meanwhile, the Korea Communications Standards Commission is expected to quickly deliberate on JTBC, which exclusively reported the wrong crime prevention camera video in connection with the drunk driving incident of BTS (BTS) member Suga.

JTBC 'Newsroom' aired a CCTV video of a man passing by the boulevard on an electric scooter on the 7th, and reported that the person in the video was Suga, but a police investigation confirmed that the man in the video was not Suga. Since then, 'Newsroom' has apologized for causing confusion at the end of the broadcast on the 16th," he bowed his head.
