'Harder punishment needed for infants' Prosecutors appeal one-year prison sentence

While actor Yoo Ah-in was sentenced to one year in prison on charges of habitual drug use, the prosecution appealed, saying the first trial ruling was too light.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said on the 4th that it has filed an appeal with the intention of giving a heavier sentence to infants sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 2 million won in the first trial on charges of 181 habitual medications such as propofol, illegal prescription and purchase of 44 sleeping pills under other people's names, smoking hemp, and destroying evidence.

The prosecution explained the reason for the appeal, saying, `Although the crime was serious, such as habitually selling and administering various drugs such as hemp, propofol, and zolpidem over a long period of time, and teaching the destruction of evidence to interfere with judicial proceedings, the sentence was significantly less than the prosecution's sentence of four years in prison.'

At the time of the final trial in July, the prosecution demanded four years in prison, a fine of 2 million won, and a fine of 1.54 million won for the infant.

Meanwhile, Yoo Ah-in was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 2 million won in the first trial held the previous day and was arrested in court. The court said that `The infant committed the crime using a loophole in the medical drug management method prescribed by the law, so the nature of the crime is not good.' `It is difficult to say that the risk of recidivism is low because the dependence on psychotropic drugs appears to be serious in light of the various circumstances shown in the record.' In addition, since the defendant was sentenced to prison, he will be arrested in court for fear of escape," he added.

Yoo Ah-in was indicted without detention on charges of habitual administration of medical propofol 181 times at hospitals in Seoul from September 2020 to March 2022. He is also accused of illegally buying 1,100 trips of sleeping pills in the name of another person 44 times between May 2021 and August 2022. In addition, he is accused of smoking marijuana in the United States with four accomplices, including Choi, an acquaintance, and teaching others to smoke.
