Jennie addressed the situation in an interview published by Harper's Bazaar on the 19th. She stated, "I understand why people are upset. It's a cultural and historical issue. Over time, societal norms evolve, and I can't resist that change. If Koreans feel I’ve done something wrong, I must acknowledge it and make amends."
Jennie came under fire after a video surfaced showing her smoking indoors. The footage depicted her holding an e-cigarette while getting her makeup done, with the smoke directed toward staff, which drew strong criticism.
Jennie's side has since expressed regret for the indoor smoking and its impact on the staff. Jennie personally reached out to the staff involved to apologize. She also extended her apology to fans who may have been disappointed, saying, "I will repay you with more mature and improved performances," she promised.
In response, foreign media outlets like the BBC commented that "Korea holds its celebrities to high moral standards and does not tolerate mistakes lightly."
