Chef Triple Star's Event Appearance in Jeopardy Amid Scandal and Public Protests

Amid the controversy surrounding the privacy of Chef Triple Star (real name Kang Seung-won, 33), who gained fame through the Netflix show 'Culinary Class Wars,' the Seoul Metropolitan Government is taking an ambiguous stance regarding his appearance at an upcoming event. On the 31st, they announced they are reviewing his participation in the event commemorating the hosting of the '2024 Asia 50 Best Restaurants,' scheduled for the 3rd, but no decision has been made yet. Currently, the cast remains unchanged.

As the revelations about Triple Star's private life continue to unsettle the public, netizens are protesting his potential appearance at the Seoul Metropolitan Government event. Complaints have surged, but it is reported that Triple Star has not provided any specific responses to the government regarding his attendance. Furthermore, he has not disclosed his position on the matter, neither to the Seoul Metropolitan Government nor on his personal accounts.

Netflix’s 'Culinary Class Wars' also declined to comment on the situation when contacted by Sports Chosun on the 30th, stating, “Please understand that it is difficult for us to confirm or convey our position regarding media reports on individual performers.”

Triple Star is currently facing a series of personal revelations. According to a report by Dispatch, he met Person A while studying at a cooking school in the U.S. in 2014, and their relationship was marked by cycles of dating, breaking up, and reuniting until 2022. Simultaneously, he dated Person B, ultimately unilaterally breaking up with her before marrying Person A in May 2022, only to divorce three months later. Since they did not officially register their marriage, no legal divorce proceedings were completed.

Person A has accused Triple Star of several controversies surrounding his private life, including allegations of lobbying for a job at a Michelin restaurant and verbal abuse. She claims to have lobbied for employment by gifting luxury items to the restaurant's chef, despite his lack of experience. While Triple Star contends he worked as an unpaid intern for three months before being recognized and hired by the head chef, Person A disputes this.

Further, troubling claims have emerged regarding Triple Star’s behavior during their relationship. Reports included allegations of him secretly filming a customer and derogatory comments about women. Since Person A returned home in 2015, Triple Star has faced accusations of inappropriate behavior, even during their long-distance relationship. A particularly shocking letter of apology from him reportedly stated, "I asked you to sleep with another man because of my greed." Although Triple Star denied the allegations, he claimed he couldn’t recall the specifics of what he wrote.

Additionally, Person A stated she invested 150 million won in establishing Triple Star's restaurant and managed areas such as marketing. She alleged that after their breakup, she faced threats and verbal abuse from him, particularly when she began a new relationship in August last year. According to her, Triple Star expressed extreme anger, stating he wanted to "stab everything to death with a knife." In response, Triple Star suggested that her account might be exaggerated, saying, “There must be a reason if he got angry.” His lawyer noted, “I have heard roughly what kind of woman she was. I think Triple Star was justified in his feelings, as I heard he was wronged.”

Born in 1991, Triple Star is a chef known for his appearance on Netflix’s 'Culinary Class Wars,' where he finished third. He is a former deputy chef at Fine Dining Mosu Seoul, run by program judge Ahn Sung-jae, and is currently the head chef at a fine dining restaurant in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam, Seoul.
