FT Island’s Lee Hong-gi opened up about his complicated feelings during the band’s first performance without Choi Min-hwan, who has been suspended amid allegations related to a prostitution scandal. The concert took place on the 2nd at Olympic Park in Seoul, marking the first official appearance of FT Island as a duo, with Lee Hong-gi and Lee Jae-jin taking the stage in Choi Min-hwan's absence.
During the show, Lee Hong-gi reflected on the emotional weight of the situation, stating, "I usually don't lose my voice this easily, but I’ve been very sensitive and focused today." He admitted to feeling a mix of depression and gratitude, sharing, "I was in a forced situation where the world was critically scrutinizing us, but your support means a lot." His passionate performance was filled with high energy, as he aimed to make the audience's weekend enjoyable despite the circumstances.
After their opening set, Lee explained, "We prepared songs that showcase our recent work rather than just the hits, as we wanted to give you something different." He also expressed his commitment to performing, stating, "I'll sing until I die," as he thanked fans for their unwavering support during this challenging time for the band.
Later, in a social media post, Lee shared a picture of the new duo formation of FT Island, expressing joy from the festival experience. He wrote, "I had so much fun and I was so happy. Your support gave me unexpected strength and comfort."
The controversy surrounding Choi Min-hwan escalated after his ex-wife, Yul-hee, accused him of sexual harassment and shared a recording that implicated him in a prostitution scheme during a YouTube segment. Following these allegations, Choi Min-hwan was accused of violating the Special Act on Prostitution and stepped down from various programs, with broadcasters taking measures to remove his appearances. His agency, FNC Entertainment, announced that FT Island would continue as a duo for the time being, with Lee Hong-gi and Lee Jae-jin carrying on without their bandmate.
Choi Min-hwan and Yul-hee, who began dating in 2017 and married in 2018, have three children together but finalized their divorce last December, adding to the complexities of the situation.
