SM Entertainment (hereinafter referred to as SM) has once again signaled a shift in the perception of the K-pop scene.

On November 5, SM announced its operating results for the third quarter of 2024, revealing its lineup of artists for the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of next year. Notably, SM generated buzz by announcing the debut of a new girl group for the first time in five years since the launch of aespa, set for the first quarter of next year.

As part of its SM 3.0 IP expansion roadmap, SM stated that it will introduce "new IPs that will continue the successful launches of RIIZE, NCT Wish, the British boy group Dear Alice, and its first virtual artist Naivis, along with a comprehensive promotional campaign coinciding with a single release in the first quarter of next year."

SM is known as the 'Idol Kingdom,' boasting a rich history. It has cultivated a legacy of 'Pink Blood,' producing artists that define each generation from the first to the fifth. In particular, its girl groups have created a narrative of 'Unbeatable Happiness,' starting with the first-generation S.E.S., followed by the second-generation Girls' Generation, the third-generation Red Velvet, and the fourth-generation aespa. With its distinctive musical style, concepts, group identities, and worldviews, SM has crafted luxury girl groups that represent K-pop on the global stage. Thus, it is anticipated that the new girl group, after a five-year wait, will also emerge as a sign of the 'fifth generation.'

In fact, netizens have already begun speculating about the identity of SM's new girl group. Given the recent retro and newt craze, many are wondering if Park So-yoon, daughter of Na Ha-eun, or actor Park Sang-min—who has been an SM trainee for a long time—will be chosen as a debut member. There are rumors that the group will embody a multi-in-one concept while retaining the pure girlishness reminiscent of early girl groups. Many fans are eagerly discussing their 'favorite combinations' among the SM trainees revealed so far.

The K-pop scene is buzzing with excitement at the prospect of a mega girl group making its debut.
