Jeju Air Disaster Halts Year-End Awards Amid National Mourning

The Jeju Air disaster at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do set a seven-day national mourning period, making it unclear whether the year-end awards ceremony will be held.

On the 29th, a Jeju Air passenger plane carrying 181 passengers crashed into the outer wall of the runway during landing at Muan International Airport, causing a major disaster that killed 179 people and injured two others.

Due to such a major disaster, broadcasters are struggling to adjust their schedules ahead of the year-end awards ceremony. Currently, there are four major award ceremonies scheduled today (30th) '2024 MBC Acting Awards', '2024 KBS Acting Awards', '2024 SBS Entertainment Awards' and '2024 MBC Music Festival'.

The '2024 MBC Broadcasting Entertainment Awards', which had already been scheduled on the night of the accident, was eventually canceled. Earlier, it was decided to cancel the awards ceremony, but after reviewing whether to proceed with the event without broadcasting, it was concluded to be canceled. MBC is reportedly discussing whether to set a new schedule later or replace it with the announcement of the winners alone.

On the 30th and 31st, the "2024 MBC Acting Awards" and the "2024 KBS Acting Awards" and the "2024 SBS Entertainment Awards" are scheduled, but they are reportedly considering whether to hold them. As the government designated the 29th to the 4th of next month as a national mourning period, broadcasters are also cautious about whether to hold the awards ceremony.

Meanwhile, the entertainment industry also mourned the victims and consoled the bereaved families. Singers Lim Young-woong and Sung Si-kyung, Jang Yoon-jung, comedians Park Na-rae, Jo Se-ho, actor So Yoo-jin, broadcasters Jang Sung-kyu, Haha, and Lee Sang-min paid tribute to the victims through solo concerts or SNS.

In addition, the entertainment industry participated in the national mourning period by canceling large events such as scheduled concerts and awards ceremonies. Broadcasters who have been active through YouTube expressed their condolences by not posting content.
