On the 22nd, the second trial of Jang Won-young's claim for damages against the Taldeok concentration camp was held at the hearing of the 9-3 Civil Appeals Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Chief Judge Yoon Jae-nam, Goodwill Jong Jeong Deok-soo). On this day, the court ruled that the defendant should pay 50 million won and delayed interest to the plaintiff.
This is equivalent to half of the judgment of the first trial (100 million won). In the first trial, all claims from Jang Won-young were recognized because the Taldeok camp did not provide any answers, but the amount of compensation decreased as the Taldeok camp changed its position in the second trial.
The Taldeok concentration camp is accused of defaming celebrities by posting videos several times from 2021 until recently. In particular, Jang Won-young spread fake news at a serious level, including rumors of romantic relationships, bullying, and discord.
In response, Jang Won-young and her agency Starship Entertainment received an information order from a U.S. court in 2023 and obtained information on the Taldeok concentration camp from Google headquarters in the U.S. Based on this, a civil and criminal lawsuit was filed against the Taldeok concentration camp.
However, the Taldeok concentration camp admitted and reflected on its actions, but claimed that it was a video for the public interest, not for slander, which caused public anger.
In January last year, the first trial court ruled that the Taldeok concentration camp should pay 100 million won to Jang Won-young. However, the Taldeok concentration camp belatedly appointed a legal representative, submitted an appeal, and applied for a suspension of execution of the lawsuit. In addition, it has responded to avoid compensation for damages by placing a deposit of 100 million won. The appeals court referred the case to mediation, but the mediation process ended in five minutes as the two sides failed to reduce their differences.
Separately, the Taldeok concentration camp has been sued by other artists, including Kang Daniel, BTS V Jungkook, EXO Suho, and Aespa, for defamation. In addition, the Incheon District Court sentenced Taldeok concentration camp to two years in prison, three years of probation, and a fine of 200 million won, but the prosecution appealed.
