The Ministry of Employment and Labor will begin special labor supervision on MBC on the 11th in connection with the death of Oyoanna, who was suspected of making an extreme choice due to bullying in the workplace. The special labor supervision team, jointly formed by the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office and the Seoul Western District Office, arrived at the site at 2 p.m. and began supervision.
Earlier, the Ministry of Employment and Labor instructed MBC to conduct its own investigation, and planned to decide whether to conduct special labor supervision based on its own investigation and the management's submission of data.
However, he explained that the bereaved family recently expressed their intention not to participate in MBC's own fact-finding investigation and that there was a petition for special supervision by the labor union.
The Ministry of Labor's position is to closely check various facts about harassment and other issues that are currently being raised through the special labor supervision, to grasp the overall status of the organizational culture, and to focus on checking violations of the labor relations law.
If any violations of the law are detected as a result of the inspection, we will take strict measures and actively guide them to prevent similar cases from occurring in the future.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labor is also investigating whether MBC violated the Serious Accident Punishment Act in connection with the allegations. Earlier, a netizen claimed that Oyoanna had complained to company insiders that she had suffered from bullying in the workplace, but that adequate protective measures had not been taken. Given that MBC's official reporting process has not actually worked, there is a possibility of violating the management manager's obligation to secure safety and health, citing that he did not post an obituary even after the death incident, a thorough legal review and investigation are needed on whether the serious accident punishment law is applied.
Oyo Anna, who joined MBC as a weatherman for open recruitment in 2021 and announced her face through tvN entertainment program 'You Quiz on the Block' in 2022, suddenly passed away in September last year. The news of the deceased's death was announced in December last year, about three months later.
On the 27th of last month, a 17-page suicide note was released. As it was reported that the suicide note contained information that he had been bullied at work by colleagues, suspicions arose that the cause of the death of the deceased was grievance caused by bullying at work.
In December last year, the bereaved family filed a lawsuit against an MBC co-worker who appeared to be the perpetrator of the deceased's workplace harassment at the Seoul Central District Court, and MBC set up a fact-finding committee to find out the cause and truth of the deceased's death.
