One in 10 young Japanese people has been sexually harassed in public, according to a survey.

According to CNN and other foreign media, the Japanese government recently surveyed about 36,000 people aged 16 to 29 about sexual harassment.

As a result, 10.5% of the respondents said they had been sexually harassed or experienced other obscene acts in public.

According to the survey, nearly 90 percent of those who said they were sexually harassed were women.

About two-thirds of respondents who experienced sexual harassment said it occurred on trains and subways, and a similar percentage said it happened during morning or evening commuting and commuting hours.

Many of these respondents said they had been sexually harassed several times, and one claimed to have been sexually harassed almost every day when he was in high school.

They also said in the survey that `I cry more when I think of memories now than I did then.'

Some survey respondents urged authorities to take stronger action.

One respondent emphasized, `We hope that the government will create a society that prevents crime, provide professionals with mental health care for victims, and conduct public relations activities to raise public awareness so that victims are not taken lightly.'

However, there are also skeptical responses to the results of the survey. It is said that the damage of sexual harassment was counted low.

Jeffrey Hall, a lecturer in Japanese studies at Kanda International University in Chiba Prefecture, pointed out that "If you talk to Japanese women, they will say sexual harassment is very common.""

"Victims fear that reporting a crime could cause problems for their colleagues or school staff, and may be reluctant to report because it is difficult to prove and the perpetrator often moves on with light punishment."

The fact that the number of reports of sexual harassment crimes is small through this investigation is also a task to be solved.

The survey found that 80% of respondents did not report a crime to police or authorities, many of whom were unaware of the seriousness of what happened to them or deemed it not worth informing the authorities.

A spokesman for the Japanese government told CNN `We must continue to educate people that sexual harassment is a serious crimeHe stressed that sexual harassment should always be reported in public.

Meanwhile, according to police statistics in 2023, Japanese police arrested about 2,000 people across the country on charges of homicide.
