At the 2024 Asian Youth Badminton Championship in Indonesia, a 17-year-old promising player of the Chinese national team, Zhang Ji-jian, died during the game, shocking.

According to Chinese media such as the Global Times and China Dotcom, Zhang Jijian (17) collapsed on the court on June 30 (local time) during a group stage match for the Asian Youth Badminton Championship.

After drawing the first set 11-11 against the Japanese player, he lost consciousness and suddenly collapsed while his opponent was preparing to serve, showing signs of convulsions.

On-site medical staff were dispatched to the hospital for first aid, but they died at around 11:20 p.m. that night.

The Asian Badminton Association and the Indonesian Badminton Association said `Less than two minutes after he collapsed, he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance waiting at the scene, but no life was saved" he said.

Currently, authorities have not specified the cause of Zhang's death, and the related situation will be disclosed later.

However, Chinese media are expressing doubts about whether first aid has been properly provided.

According to the on-site screen, medical staff did not provide AED (external defibrillator) or CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) first aid until Zhang Ji-jian collapsed and left the stadium on a stretcher, and specific treatment conditions in ambulances and hospitals have not yet been disclosed.

Chinese doctors emphasized that if you fall unconscious without physical contact, you should first suspect a heart attack, and that CPR should be performed even if the AED did not intervene on time, especially in high-intensity professional games.

In addition, media point out that there should be a detailed explanation of whether the medical staff has taken the necessary measures during the transfer process.

Meanwhile, Zhang was born in Zhejiang Province in 2007 and joined the youth national team in 2023, and was considered a promising player in China's badminton scene, including winning the men's singles in the U15-17 final at the 2022 National U Series Badminton Championship, winning the men's singles in Group B at the 2023 National Youth Badminton Championship, winning the men's singles at the Dutch Youth Badminton International Championship in 2024, and winning the men's team at Group B at the 2024 National Youth Badminton Championship.

In a pre-match interview, media reported that Jang Ji-jen was in good condition, saying he would prove himself with the performance of the game.
