Bundang Seoul National University Hospital 'Opens the door to the intensive care unit beds exclusively for children'

Jul 10, 2024

Bundang Seoul National University Hospital (Director Song Jeong-han) registered a pediatric intensive care unit bed separated from an adult for the first time in Gyeonggi-do and held an opening ceremony on the 9th. More specialized treatment of severely ill children is possible by expanding professional manpower and equipment in a separate and independent space for severely ill children.

The pediatric intensive care unit, located on the 12th floor of Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, is a specialized treatment facility for severely ill children and operates a total of 6 beds. A dedicated specialist dedicated to the pediatric intensive care unit was present, and 31 pediatric nurses were assigned to meet the highest standards for nursing grades.

If the patient's condition is critical, he/she is treated in the 'intermediate care unit', and if he/she is less than 1 month old, he/she is treated in the 'intermediate care unit', and patients aged 1 month to 18 years old are treated in the 'intermediate care unit'. In Korea, only 11 senior hospitals and 2 general hospitals have pediatric intensive care units so far, and most hospitals operate some beds in adult intensive care units as pediatric beds.

Unlike adults, children need careful management and treatment due to their different physical and physiological characteristics, and there are separate medical equipment or medical devices for children, so providing an optimized treatment environment and professional manpower to severely ill children is essential to increase survival rates and improve treatment outcomes.

Bundang Seoul National University Hospital is the only 'Children's Public Specialized Care Center' designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in May 2023 and operates a 40 bed neonatal intensive care unit and a pediatric emergency room separated from adults. The newly opened pediatric intensive care unit is the first and largest independent pediatric intensive care unit in Gyeonggi-do and is expected to play a key role in the domestic treatment system as well as in Gyeonggi-do.

Bundang Seoul National University Hospital plans to continue specializing in the medical environment of the pediatric intensive care unit in the future. Following the registration and opening of beds this year, in 2025, additional pediatric intensive care specialists will be hired to strengthen the 'dedicated medical care system' and expand specialized medical devices for children. The goal is to develop the capacity of the pediatric intensive care unit so that children suffering from severe diseases can receive professional treatment in an optimal environment, while strengthening the regional medical cooperation and return system so as not to miss the most important 'Golden Time' in the treatment of seriously ill children.

Song Jeong-han, director of Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, said, `Although some beds in the adult intensive care unit have been operated as pediatric intensive care units, the opening of a pediatric intensive care unit separate from adults has strengthened the expertise of intensive care for pediatric patients.' `Bundang Seoul National University Hospital will continue to make more efforts to fulfill its role as a regional public medical responsible institution.'

Choi Chang-won, director of the Children's Public Medical Center, said "The Bundang Seoul National University Hospital Children's Public Medical Center provided an opportunity to further solidify the pediatric intensive care system in the community.""In the future, we will develop the capacity of the pediatric intensive care unit to provide high-quality intensive care for pediatric intensive care patients" he said."
