A video of a fire caused by a battery explosion inside an elevator has recently become a hot topic online in China.

According to Chinese media Shintu Daily and online portal Baidu, a man in his 50s carried an electric bicycle lithium battery in an apartment elevator in Haiju District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province.

As soon as he pressed the button on the first floor and the closing button, the battery in his hand exploded in an instant.

The flames soared inside the elevator with the sound of a "bang" followed by thick smoke, and in just three seconds, the CCTV footage darkened and there was nothing in sight.

People who were waiting for the elevator on the first floor witnessed it and came with a fire extinguisher to put out the fire and pull out the man.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment, but he finally died after 26 days.

The man reportedly told his wife before going out that the battery was hot and that he would go out and cool it down.

The fire accident certificate issued by the fire department listed the cause of the fire as the thermal runaway of the lithium battery of the electric bicycle.

In fact, this is a video of an accident that occurred in October 2021.

Recently, as concerns over lithium battery accidents have been raised one after another, past accident videos have become a hot topic again.

Netizens are responding "It's terrible", "It's a replay, but it gives me goosebumps", "It's probably improved now".

Experts emphasized that if lithium batteries are not properly stored or disposed of, they can suddenly explode, so caution is needed.

He added that if there is a sharp rise in battery temperature, battery deformation, electrolyte leakage, or spicy smell, these are important precursor symptoms of battery explosion.
