Future medical life science talents experience anatomy at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital
Jul 30, 2024
"It's similar to a human heart? It's amazing how a pig heart looks like this."
On the 22nd, students' curious voices were heard in the video conference room on the 3rd floor of the 2nd annex of Hallim University Sacred Heart Hospital (Hospital Director Yoo Kyung-ho). Thirty-one second-year students from Anyang Girls' High School, who want to enter the medical life department, visited the hospital to listen to 'Introduction to Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery and Lecture on Cardiac Anatomy Experiment'.
Anyang Girls' High School has been selected as a Gyeonggi-do Science-focused School from the second semester of 2023, strengthening the science and mathematics curriculum and promoting diversification of related experience activities. The Gyeonggi-do Science-focused School is a system to revitalize science education at general high schools, which is being implemented by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education to foster excellent scientific talents and support science and engineering careers in the region.
As part of the Gyeonggi-do Science-focused school curriculum, Koh Ho-hyun and Lim Jung-hyun, professors of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, conducted a two-hour training session with theoretical lectures, pig heart dissection experiments, and Q&A for students who have dreams of medical life industries such as doctors, nurses, and researchers.
In the theoretical lecture, we learned basic knowledge such as a brief introduction to cardiovascular thoracic surgery, structure and function of the heart, an overview of heart surgery, and surgical anatomy. An anatomy observation class followed to further understand biological principles. The students had vivid experiences of directly observing and understanding the anatomy, such as examining the aortic valve and proximal area, aortic valve resection, and identifying atrial septal defects through actual experimental pig hearts.
Seo Ji-ji, a second-year student at Anyang Girls' High School who attended the lecture, expressed her feelings, saying, `It was interesting to be able to observe the heart I knew vaguely after hearing the detailed explanation.' As a life worker is a dream, it has helped me a lot in making career decisions.'
The last question-and-answer session took place in a comfortable atmosphere. Various questions continued, ranging from questions about hospital life to professional questions about cardiac anatomy. When asked if the rate of synchronization between the drama and the actual cardiothoracic surgeon is high, Professor Lim Jeong-hyun smiled by saying, `When I see the patient become healthy, the difficulties disappear like snow melting.' `But still, dramas are just dramas and not as romantic as you might imagine.'
Chang Cheol-kwon, head of the convergence science department at Anyang Girls' High School, said, `To provide high-quality career education to students, we will have a career program at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, a representative hospital in the region.'We hope that this opportunity will help students grow into human resources that enhance the dignity of life and human health.'
Professor Ko Ho-hyun readily cooperated with the education to help nurture talents who will lead the development and future of local educationHe encouraged that ""We continue our passion and interest in the life field of " and support it to grow into a good professional human resource in the life science field"."
