The South Korean team at the 2024 Paris Olympics was called the weakest ever, but contrary to the initial concerns, it is cruising above expectations.

Oh Sang-wook won the first Olympic individual gold medal in Korean men's sabre fencing history, and Oh Ye-jin and Kim Ye-ji won gold and silver medals in the women's 10-meter air pistol final.

In addition, swimming was hot with cheering for Team Korea, with Kim Woo-min winning a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle for the first time in 12 years, and the women's archery team achieved a feat of 10 consecutive team events.

In badminton, table tennis, swimming, and golf in the future, the gold medal is expected, so enthusiastic cheering in front of the TV is expected. However, if you cheer in an inappropriate posture, it can adversely affect joint health, so caution is needed.

▶'Olympic supporters'…Wrong posture causes back and neck pain

The time difference between Korea and Paris is 7 hours, and since major games are between late night and early morning, caution is needed because cheering for the Olympics can lead to health in the summer. If you cheer while watching TV broadcasts in an inappropriate position, your neck, shoulders, and back can be stiff and aching the next day. At this time, the most vulnerable part is the back.

Director Lee Hak-sun (neurosurgeon), head of the spine center at Barunseang Hospital, said "Wrong posture can lead to pain in the back, legs, and neck. In particular, it is easy to put pressure on the waist just by sitting down, but if you sit on the floor or sofa for a long time and bend your back and watch TV, you can develop various spinal pain diseases such as low back pain."

The disk in the waist is originally structured to contain jelly-like nuclei that absorb shock well within the very tough and elastic fiber border. This disk naturally regresses when used for a long time, but if you have a bad posture and lifestyle, it can damage the disk or promote regression even at a young age, and if chronic back pain persists, it is likely to eventually lead to a herniated disk.

In addition, there are many cases of watching sports games on smartphones recently, and if you look at the screen in the same position for a long time, your neck can be strained. If you bow your head for a long time, take out your neck in a bent position, and watch it, neck fatigue and pain are caused. If the wrong posture persists, the neck bone, which should be maintained as a C-curve, is transformed into a straight neck or turtle neck, and if the normal C-curve continues to be lost, the disk can protrude and develop into a neck disk that compresses nerves.

It stabilizes in the early stages of neck and lumbar discs and can be recovered through non-surgical treatments such as medication, manual therapy, physical therapy, and injection therapy. However, if you miss the timing of treatment while neglecting symptoms, or if the pain does not improve even with conservative treatment, or if you have paralysis symptoms, it can lead to surgical treatment, so care should be taken.

▶ Cheering in the right position, stretching from time to time

To enjoy the Olympics with a healthy waist, it is important to watch TV in the right posture, stretch between times, and prevent your body from becoming rigid. It is desirable to relax your spine and maintain a correct posture by stretching for 5-10 minutes before watching the game as if players are warming up before the game.

Director Lee Hak-sun said, `When you watch the Olympic Games on TV at home late at night, you will sit halfway at an angle or cross your legs to take a comfortable posture, which is often not good for musculoskeletal health such as the neck and waist. If this wrong posture persists, it can cause neck or back intervertebral disc escape", he explained.

The correct posture for watching the Olympics is to put your hips as deep as possible when sitting on a sofa or chair so that there is no space, and the TV is about 15 degrees lower than the eye level. When watching a game on a smartphone, you should pay attention to not only your throat health but also your eye health. Lifting the liquid crystal to the eye level and maintaining the distance between the screen and the eye more than 30cm can reduce eye fatigue as well as neck and shoulder pain. It is also recommended to get up every hour, change your posture, and stretch your neck and shoulders.
