Naver founder and Global Investment Officer (GIO) Lee Hae-jin, who attended the summit session of the 'AI Seoul Summit' in May for the first time in nearly five years, is actively moving, meeting Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in the U.S. on the 25th (local time). The reason is, of course, because of 'Sovereign AI', which means AI, which is Naver's future food and GIO's top concern, especially AI by country. On this day, GIO discussed the Sovereign AI issue with CEO Jensen Hwang at Nvidia headquarters, accompanied by major executives of Team Naver, including Naver Soo Yeon Choi CEO and Naver Cloud CEO Kim Yoo-won.
Naver is facing a crisis this year due to unfavorable factors such as the conflict of management rights of Line Yahu with the Japanese government. This GIO aims to make Sovereign AI a key growth engine that will determine Naver's fate. Naver first signed a partnership with Aramco Digital, a subsidiary of Saudi Aramco, in March and decided to promote the development of Sovereign AI based on the Arabic language giant language model (LLM), as well as the establishment of Sovereign cloud and super apps optimized for the Middle East. In addition, in May, it signed an agreement with Converge ICT Solutions, a Philippine Internet service provider, to promote digital transformation of the Philippines using Sovereign Cloud and AI.
This GIO has emphasized the importance of 'data sovereignty' and independent AI technology and infrastructure. Although Naver and Nvidia's main businesses are different, they both have a common denominator that has emphasized the importance of Sovereign AI early on. It is analyzed that Naver is emphasizing the importance of Sovereign AI to secure new markets that can supply infrastructure such as AI semiconductors, while NVIDIA is emphasizing the importance of Sovereign AI for global expansion of the source technology for building super massive AI 'HyperClova X'.
