A paper jointly participated by medical staff at Nowon Eulji University Hospital (Hospital Director Yoo Tak-geun) won the Korean Association of Internal Medicine's Outstanding Paper Award. Professors Hyo-jung Kim, Jin-taek Kim, and Jeong Kyung-yeon Kim of the Department of Endocrinology and Prof. So-young Lee of the Department of Nephrology received the award for their study 'Effectiveness and Safety of Denosumab for the Treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease and Osteoporosis in Stage 3b-4'.

Denosumab is a drug used to treat osteoporosis and is an antibody against RANKL (Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor κB Ligand). This drug is not excreted in the kidneys, so it can be used for patients with chronic kidney disease, but due to the limitation that there are not many related studies and concerns about the occurrence of hypocalcemia, careful attention is required.

Professor Kim Jin-taek of Endocrine Medicine found that "denosumab treatment significantly increased bone density for 1 year in patients with stage 3b-4 chronic kidney disease and osteoporosis."We confirmed that taking calcium and vitamin D supplements together can achieve therapeutic effects without the occurrence of severe hypocalcemia" Then "We look forward to promoting effective treatment of osteoporosis vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease osteoporosis, which is difficult to treat in the future."," he said.

Meanwhile, the Korean Academy of Internal Medicine, established in December 1945, has nearly 23,000 members. The official journal, the Korean Journal of Internal Medicine (KJIM), has been listed on the SCIE since 2014, starting with its publication in October 1949, with an impact factor of 3.165 as of 2021.
