According to Peruvian daily El Comercio and Andina news agency on the 9th (local time), police said they found a mummified body in the first camp (5200m) of Mount Ouscaran (6,768m above sea level).
The recovery of the body was carried out on the 5th by the Peruvian police mountain rescue team and personnel from the snow mountain climbing guide company.
The deceased was William Stample, a U.S. national who went missing 22 years ago, according to media.
Stample went missing in an avalanche on June 24, 2002, while climbing with two acquaintances.
At the time, the body of one of the three missing people was found, but the whereabouts of Stample and the other were unknown, El Comercio said.
The mummified body still had well-preserved hiking boots, eisen, clothing, driver's license and passport.
Police maintained the original form due to the effects of snow and ice covering the body, police said.
Ouaskaran is the highest mountain in Peru, located in the Cordillera Blanca Mountains, part of the Andes.
