Professor Hwang Ho-sik of Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital, 'Smart Wand for the visually impaired' as a patent obstacle hearing signal

Jul 29, 2024

Professor Hwang Ho-sik of Yeouido St. Mary's Eye Hospital at Catholic University recently completed patent registration with 'Smart Wand for the visually impaired'.

'Smart Wands for the Blind' identifies close obstacles by sensors and alerts the blind to the surrounding situation with audible signals. A large number of proximity sensors, including ultrasonic sensors, are installed on the cane to output different sounds depending on the height and left and right positions of the obstacle, helping the visually impaired easily identify the location of the obstacle.

Professor Hwang said, `We hope that commercializing smart jeepangs for the visually impaired in the future will greatly help the safe movement of the disabled.'

Meanwhile, Professor Hwang has patented a 'way guidance system for the visually impaired' that combines special glasses equipped with cameras, headphones, and microphones and smartphones to be guided by voice.
