Professor Kim Jae-yong of neurosurgery at Bundang Seoul National University Hospital was recently inaugurated as the 34th president of the Korean Brain Tumor Society at a regular conference of the Korean Brain Tumor Society held at the Onoma Hotel in Daejeon.

The Korean Brain Tumor Society is Korea's leading brain tumor surgery and treatment research society, which has celebrated its 33rd anniversary this year since its foundation in 1991, and is leading the global standard of brain tumor treatment through active academic activities such as publishing the official journal 『Brain Tumor Research and Treatment" and holding domestic and international conferences.

Kim Jae-yong, the new chairman, is an authority in the field of brain tumor and gamma knife, who is the head professor of the School of Neurosurgery at Seoul National University Medical School, the head of the educational talent development office at Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, and the head of neurosurgery, and served as the executive secretary of the WFNOS 2021 (World Neurooncology Society 2021 academic conference) organizing committee and the editor of the Brain Tumor Research and Treatment (BTRT). In addition, he served as the general director of the Korean Brain Oncology Association in 2016 and the academic director of the Donghak Association in 2019, and in 2017, he played a major role as the chairman of the compilation committee of the society's first Korean textbook 'Brain Oncology'.



In his inaugural address, Chairman Kim Jae-yong cited the project to publish a revised edition of brain oncology textbooks as the most important task during his term in office. The goal is to revise and publish the Korean textbook 'Brain Oncology' published by the 2018 conference, covering the latest knowledge such as the brain tumor classification system newly announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021 and the rapidly changing diagnosis and treatment.

In addition, he presented a blueprint for the development of the Korean Brain Tumor Association by announcing ▲ Raising its international status through cooperation with world-class academic organizations such as the Japanese Brain Tumor Society and the American Neurotumor Society ▲ Creating an environment where neurosurgeons can work with pride ▲ Reorganizing educational programs and developing advanced educational programs using simulations.



Chairman Kim Jae-yong said, `With numerous brain tumor specialists working together with the Korean Society for Brain Tumor, the domestic brain tumor treatment environment has also improved dramatically from the past"As there are still many areas of brain tumors that have not been identified, and there are still types with extremely low survival rates, the society will lead the way to find a breakthrough through innovative research," he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman Kim is a medical scientist who has contributed a lot at home and abroad in the treatment of malignant brain tumors, including the leading clinical research results on the combination of radiation and oral anticancer drugs after surgery in malignant gliomas, and participating as Korea's representative of international multi-center clinical trials and publishing a number of important academic papers.



Currently, it is leading next-generation medical research based on innovative technologies, such as conducting clinical trials that combine standard and mixed immune cell therapy to treat glioblastoma, known as the most difficult brain tumor.
