Middle-aged uninvited guests 'No-preventable', but it can reduce inconvenience

A person in his 40s who works hard, handles the latest electronic devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs freely, and leads social trends and lives young is called 'Young 40'.

In the past, people in their 40s are considered to have already passed middle age, but now the aspect is quite different. People in their 40s and 50s are more energetic and younger than ever. However, from this time on, one cannot deceive one's age as much as one's eyesight.

As you pass your 40s, you can see long distances well, but you can't see the letters on the screen of a book or cell phone well, and when you play golf or exercise, you often suffer from blurred vision at a close distance.

In the 50s, these symptoms worsen, and presbyopia is the cause.

presbyopia is a typical symptom of the eye in middle age. In order to have clear vision, the elastic lens and strong control muscles must work properly to adjust the focus so that the image is accurately formed on the retina.

However, as you get older, not only do transparent and elastic lenses become blurred and hardened, but the surrounding control muscles that control the thickness of the lens lose their power. Therefore, it is difficult to see small letters on smartphones or documents without magnifying glasses.

presbyopia can sometimes be accompanied by pain. If you frown or concentrate on something close, you will experience stable fatigue (眼睛疲勞), such as pressure and fatigue in your eyes, and sometimes headaches. Severe cases can include symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. There is also a lot of inconvenience in everyday life. In the past, I stutter on the letters of books or documents that I would quickly read, and if myopia is present, I sometimes use magnifying glasses when looking at a close distance, and regular glasses when looking at a far distance. In some cases, if you take a small pill incorrectly because you cannot distinguish it, or if you wear multifocal glasses to overcome it, you fall after tripping on the stairs.

There is no trick to completely prevent presbyopia that makes daily life uncomfortable. This is because it is an aging phenomenon of the body that occurs naturally with age. This is the same for cataracts.

However, if you take good care of your eyes, you can reduce discomfort and delay cataracts.

First, you have to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays. Excessive ultraviolet light promotes denaturation of the lens. If you are doing outdoor activities in the middle of the day when the sun is strong these days, you must wear sunglasses. It is essential for long-term exercise or going out, and it can also prevent dry eyes by preventing wind and fine dust along with ultraviolet rays.

In the case of presbyopia, training to consciously stare repeatedly at buildings or mountains that are close to objects in everyday life can also be helpful. It is also important to eat nutrients that are good for your eyes. Green and yellow vegetables such as carrots, spinach, and broccoli rich in lutein are often put on the table. It helps prevent macular degeneration, a blindness disease, as well as presbyopia by supplying nutrients to the macula.

Among those who feel great discomfort in their daily life due to presbyopia, presbyopia surgery is also considered. It is a surgery that takes out the cloudy and hardened lens and puts the multifocal prosthetic lens. Recently, bi-focus and triple-focus lenses have been developed one after another considering short distances and intermediate distances, and patients' options are getting wider. However, there are cases where it is difficult to adapt depending on the patient, so you have to choose and have surgery after sufficient consultation with an ophthalmologist. In particular, there is a possibility of cataracts after the mid-50s, so accurate examinations should be given priority. In addition, surgery is difficult even if there is retinal bleeding or macular degeneration due to diabetes, so you should undergo a close preliminary examination.
