The strong UV rays in summer penetrate not only the skin but also the eyes, so they have a lot of adverse effects on eye health. However, most people take care of their skin thoroughly with sunscreen to prevent skin damage, but they often neglect their eyes. With the help of Professor Lee Soo-na of ophthalmology at Eulji University Hospital in Daejeon, we will learn more about cataracts.

▶ The eyes look white inside 'Caucoma'

Cataracts literally mean 'the inner part of the eyes looks white' and refer to a disease in which the lens becomes opaque, causing vision problems. The lens is located in the center of our eyes and allows us to see objects and functions as a lens of a camera. Fingerprints or stains on camera lenses also affect the resulting photos. In this way, if the lens is not clean and blurred due to some cause, the image of the object cannot pass through the lens and the retina is not accurately focused, resulting in vision impairment.

Cataracts are most common in senile cataracts caused by aging of the eyes, but in addition, ▲ acquired cataracts ▲ traumatic cataracts (broken lens due to trauma or clouding lens due to bruising) ▲ cataracts caused by some other drugs such as steroids can occur. Not only can it occur due to external factors such as strong UV exposure in summer, smoking and drinking, and blue light generated by electronic devices, but patients with diabetes or high blood pressure can also suffer from complications.

▶ Cataracts that appear blurry and are difficult to drive at night, fundamental treatment is surgery

Cataracts are diseases that do not appear in a short period of time and occur over several years, and do not show any abnormal symptoms in the early stages. However, as the opacity of the lens increases, vision decreases and glare symptoms appear that spread light. In addition, it appears cloudy as if there is fog everywhere, and objects in the distance appear unclear. In addition, it is difficult to read books in dark places, it becomes difficult to drive at night, and it is often blinding and sometimes double vision appears in which objects are seen in two just with one eye. When cataracts worsen, the color of the pupil, which should be seen black with the naked eye, turns gray or white, and the cloudy lens expands, causing eye pressure to rise and inflammation of the eyes, accompanied by eye pain, headache, congestion, and vision impairment.

If the symptoms are early, the progress can be slowed down through drug treatment in the form of eye drops, but this cannot transparently return the cloudy lens again and surgical treatment is essential for fundamental resolution.

Professor Lee Soo-na explained, `A cataract surgery involves removing the lens of a cataract with ultrasound and inserting an artificial lens into one's eye that can replace the lens"It is a relatively simple operation, and the operation time is short and recovery is fast, so normal activities are possible the day after the operation " he explained.

▶ Avoid UV rays and prevent them with regular checkups

There is no specific prevention method because congenital cataracts are a disease that has been carried out since birth, and senile cataracts are caused by a natural aging process with increasing age. However, it can help prevent cataracts if you consciously reduce the use of smartphones and tablet PCs, or close your eyes and give your eyes a break after looking at them for a long time.

In summer, when the sun is strong like these days, it is better to avoid direct exposure to ultraviolet rays for a long time and wear a hat or sunglasses when going out. Usually, sunglasses are used only in travel destinations, so they feel awkward and rejected to wear them in daily life, but just as you wear sunscreen every day, you should always wear sunglasses when you go out so that the ultraviolet rays do not come into direct contact with your eyes to protect healthy eyes. It is also important to check the ultraviolet index, just like checking the weather and fine dust index before going out. Avoid going out from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when the ultraviolet rays are particularly strong, and stay in the shade if possible even if you go out in the middle of the day when the ultraviolet rays are high.

It can help recover damaged eye tissue by activating enzymes in the body by taking vitamins such as green vegetables and fruits.

Professor Lee Soo-na said, "Eye health has a big impact on life, so it is important to keep your eyes healthy through regular checkups when you are healthy."Especially if you have diabetes or have a family history, cataracts caused by diabetes can occur, so you should have a checkup every six months to a year and control your sugar level through blood sugar checks." he advised.
