Scaling treatment is a representative example of national health insurance application related to dentistry. It is known that adults over the age of 19 can receive National Health Insurance support (30% out-of-pocket rate) for scaling costs once a year.

However, there are dental-related national health insurance support items that can be applied not only to adults but also to infants and young adults under the age of 18. In particular, any national health insurance subscriber can receive support, so it is necessary to carefully check the items that can be received by period for children's oral health.

Together with Professor Hyun Hong-geun of Pediatric Dentistry at Seoul National University Dental Hospital, we summarized the dental examinations and treatment items that can be received through the National Health Insurance from infants to adolescence.

First, there is an oral examination for infants and toddlers. From 18 months to 65 months of age, infants and toddlers can receive a total of four free of charge.

The oral examination period for infants and toddlers is set from the 1st to the 4th. The first round is conducted between 18 and 29 months, mainly checking whether the baby teeth are coming out well and whether the tooth function is in a healthy state.

The second round is performed at 30 to 41 months, and the third round is performed at 42 to 53 months, and check whether the condition of the baby is appropriate and whether there is a cavity. It also guides guardians on how to take care of their children's teeth.

The fourth period is 54 to 65 months, and this is when a child begins to brush his or her teeth on his or her own. Therefore, check whether the child is brushing properly, taking good care of the mouth, and check the presence of tooth development or tooth decay, and guide the guardians on how to care for their children's teeth.

Professor Hyun Hong-geun said, "In the case of tooth decay during an oral examination, if a cavity or disease is found during an oral examination, it is very important to take necessary treatment early before it is too late and to take care of the teeth by applying fluoride after treatment." In particular, since oral examinations for infants and toddlers have been expanded from three to four since June 2022, parents are encouraged to plan examinations by period for their children's oral health."

Another item is 'combination resin treatment', commonly referred to as resin treatment. It is a treatment that supports the treatment of tooth decay in permanent teeth of children under the age of 12, precisely removes only the area with tooth decay, performs special adhesion, and restores it to its original tooth shape using a material called composite resin similar to the tooth color.

Occasionally, if the cavity progresses a lot, nerve treatment (dimension treatment) is required, and the National Health Insurance coverage of the combined resin is only possible for permanent teeth that do not require dental treatment. In addition, up to four national health insurance support per day is possible when treating permanent dental composite resin for children under the age of 12. If there are more than four cavities to be treated, they can be applied again within the range of four by visiting the hospital on the other day after treatment and receiving treatment for the rest of the cavities.

Dubbed tooth groove filling, 'Cutting Fever Sealant Treatment' is applicable to the national health insurance for permanent teeth up to adolescents under the age of 18. One of the places where a lot of cavities occur is the deep groove on the molar chew side. It is known to have a great effect on preventing tooth decay by cleaning it cleanly before the occurrence of tooth decay and filling the groove with special adhesive methods and materials to make the surface as if it had been coated.

Professor Hyun Hong-geun emphasized that for tooth groove filling treatment, up to four can be applied to the national health insurance only for the upper and lower permanent teeth without dentures. "The national health insurance provides 90% of the total treatment costs, so the patient's cost burden is low, but the prevention effect is high."

Professor Hyun then recommends that if you suspect a disease, you visit the dentist for a checkup as soon as possible, receive treatment in the early stages of the disease, and receive guidance on how to take care of your teeth"In particular, oral diseases in infants and adolescents often progress much faster than adults, which not only causes discomfort in daily life, but also can adversely affect growth and development due to difficulty in comfortable food intake," he said.
