According to local media such as CCTV and China Dotcom, a fire broke out at Jiuding Shopping Plaza in Tsugung City, Sichuan Province, China at around 6 p.m. on the 17th.
The fire was extinguished at around 10 p.m. on the same night, and 16 of the people in the building were confirmed to have died.
An initial investigation by the fire authorities estimated that the fire broke out during internal construction work.
Authorities said they are conducting a closer investigation.
Meanwhile, when the fire broke out, a crane driver was found to have rescued about 20 people inside.
He saw a fire during construction nearby and saved people by attaching a crane bucket to the railing of a shopping center.
