10-fold increase in COVID-19 patients. Formation of the Medical Association 'COVID-19 Countermeasures Committee'

Aug 09, 2024

The Korean Medical Association (Chairman Lim Hyun-taek) plans to form a 'COVID-19 Countermeasures Committee' to respond as a resurgence is expected due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 (Omicron KP.3).

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on the 9th that 861 COVID-19 hospitalized patients were reported as of the first week of August, an increase of about 9.5 times over the past five weeks based on 91 in the first week of July. However, considering the sample monitoring results, the actual number of confirmed cases is expected to be much higher, and considering the trend, the number of COVID-19 patients is expected to continue to increase by the end of August.

In addition, infectious diseases such as whooping cough and mycoplasma pneumonia, which show respiratory symptoms similar to COVID-19, are also spreading, making it difficult to distinguish them from COVID-19, and the supply of COVID-19 treatments such as Paxlovid and Lagebrio is not smooth.

Accordingly, as an expert organization, the Medical Association will urgently convene experts in related fields to form a specialized committee on COVID-19 countermeasures and strategically prepare measures to respond to the infection crisis in the community.

"Despite the recent surge in COVID-19 and signs of a resurgence, the government has no guidance or guidance to the public and the medical community. The public is anxious amid the spread of COVID-19, but the government has shown no willingness to respond and it is questionable whether it has the ability to do so. "In response, the Korean Medical Association decided to devise its own countermeasures separately from the government, which is neglecting COVID-19, and to proactively respond to the spread of infection in the community by immediately launching a specialized COVID-19 countermeasure committee."

Spokesman Choi said, `We will do our best to ensure that the people can continue to recover their daily lives over the past year"I would like to ask the people to wear masks and pay attention to personal hygiene, such as washing their hands, when there are many people," he said.

Meanwhile, even during the COVID-19 infectious disease crisis that began in 2020, the Korean Medical Association has presented various policies to respond to infectious diseases professionally and academically as the top health care expert organization. In particular, it has actively tried to protect public health and life by presenting preemptive policies based on the community, such as preparing measures to expand home treatment led by community medical institutions, designated respiratory care institutions, respiratory patient care centers, and supply of edible treatments.
