A British man in his 20s is known to have his hair puffed up like a balloon after dying his hair at home.

Ryan Briggs, 27, of Lancashire, northwestern England, went to his mother's house early last month and found a black dye, according to the British media The Sun.

Before dyeing, the dye had to be tested for skin side effects, but he did not know that, so he immediately applied the dye to his scalp.

I had a burning feeling, but I fell asleep thinking it was a general reaction of hair dye.

When Ryan woke up the next day, he noticed a scaly rash around his hairline.

I was worried, but when he went to work as usual, he was astonished to see his face grow all day.

He was "not who I was. It has grown to an awful extent."

He rushed to the hospital and was told by the doctor to come back the next day if his condition worsened.

But the next day, Ryan's face was so swollen that he couldn't see one eye.

Unable to drive, he put on an ambulance and visited the hospital again.

The doctor diagnosed him with an allergic reaction to 'paraphenylenediamine (PPD)', a chemical commonly contained in hair dye.

He had to stay in the hospital for 13 hours to prevent his throat and airway from swelling.

After discharge, a total of 25 pills per day had to be taken to calm the swelling for 5 days.

Fortunately, the swelling in the face and head disappeared, but several scabs developed.

On the other hand, para-phenylenediamine, a component of hair dye, is widely used to make black, and there is a high risk of developing contact allergies.

In addition to hair dye, it is also contained in fur dyes, Moon Credit products, photo developers, printer ink, oil, gasoline, and some cosmetics.

Short-term skin contact may cause irritation and allergic reactions, and long-term skin contact may cause asthma and breathing problems.

In addition, caution is required when using it because it has the potential to adversely affect dermatitis, ophthalmic diseases, kidneys and liver.
