'Brain spinal fluid'Lapse location, pinpoint Severance Hospital'DSM test' performed

Severance Hospital is the only domestic test method that accurately diagnoses 'Voluntary cranial pressure drop'.

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a condition in which the pressure in the head drops due to a leak in cerebrospinal fluid. The cerebrospinal fluid protects the brain from external shocks, and holes in the spinal canal through which these fluids flow are the main cause of cerebrospinal fluid leakage.

Patients complain of discomfort with orthostatic headaches, neck pain, tinnitus, and dizziness, but treatment accuracy is low. The diagnosis of SIH is mainly to determine whether cerebrospinal fluid is accumulated through MRI and spinal angiography.

Severance Hospital introduced Digital Subtraction Myelography (DSM) to overcome the limitations of existing diagnostic methods. DSM injects contrast medium into the spinal cord and monitors the flow in real time to accurately locate the hole where the cerebrospinal fluid leaks.

At this time, DSM has a high time resolution for visual observation, so the flow of spinal cord can be grasped in real time. It is an inspection method that has already been introduced and is being implemented in the United States and other countries.

In Korea, Severance Hospital is the only one introduced and applied to SIH tests. Professor Joo Min-kyung and other neurology professors and Kim Dong-joon, a professor of radiology, are conducting one-stop diagnosis and treatment through close cooperation.

Professor Joo Min-kyung said "With the introduction of this test method, as it is possible to accurately diagnose spontaneous cranial pressure reduction, the treatment plan can also be established quickly, and high treatment effects can be expected."
