Since some time ago, a white curtain has come up on my eyes, and most of those who visit the hospital often think they are cataracts. However, in this case, there are not a few patients with the metaplasia. As such, the plexus is often mistaken for cataracts due to the symptoms of a white membrane covering the cornea (eyes).

As its name implies, 翼狀片 is a condition in which a piece of wing (翼) shape (片)' occurs on the surface of the eye. That's why it's called a separate 'military wing' Abnormal proliferation of conjunctival (white porcelain) tissue causes fibro-vascular tissue to invade the cornea, resulting in a triangular white film on the eyeball surface. It is often expressed as having whiteness, but it occurs a lot in the elderly and appears twice as much in men as in women.

On the other hand, cataracts show turbidity such as white or yellow and brown in severe cases due to denaturation of proteins in the transparent lens. The lens turns blurry, and it is not easy to confirm with the naked eye unless it is severe.

Professor Kim Yong-chan, an ophthalmologist at the Catholic University of Korea's Incheon St. Mary's Hospital, said, `The right upper limb complains of congestion and foreign body sensations by proliferated fibro-vascular tissue, and astigmatism is caused by lesions that cover the axis or grow to the cornea, resulting in poor vision.' `It is rapidly increasing from the 50s, and is mainly observed in the population group with a lot of smoking or outdoor activities.'

▶Guessing the main cause of environmental factors…If it's too bad, it could lead to poor vision

According to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of people who received treatment for the wing of the wing decreased by 17.4% over the past four years from 68,602 in 2019 to 56,693 last year (2023).

The cause of the epiphany is not yet clear. However, given that it occurs a lot in people who spend a lot of time outdoors, it is speculated that environmental factors such as ultraviolet rays, dust, and dry air are mainly acting. In addition, aging, abnormal protein degeneration due to diabetes, trauma, genetic factors, and factors caused by drugs such as steroids are also considered causes.

The plexus is usually asymptomatic, and there is no pain because it grows slowly over a long period of time. Most people visit hospitals for cosmetic reasons because they have no inconvenience in their daily lives. Occasionally, corneal astigmatism can occur in severe cases. Invading some pupils can cause vision impairment. If you are tired, you may get bloodshot, and after bathing or washing your hair, your bloodshot may become especially severe. As the fibrous tissue thickens and protrudes, tears dry out, wounds, and dry eyes appear.

Professor Kim Yong-chan said "The upper extremity is diagnosed after observation through a microlight microscope, and if it progresses significantly, vision loss that cannot be corrected even with glasses may occur."

▶Caution due to high recurrence rate of cosmetic surgery... Prevent with daily care such as wearing sunglasses

It is recommended to remove the wing immediately after detection. If a strabismus occurs because it is too large, or if vision is reduced due to invasion of the axis of vision, surgery must be performed to remove the ampulla. However, if the ampulla is simply removed and the sclera is exposed, the recurrence rate is very high. The surrounding conjunctiva should be pulled to cover the exposed sclera, or the conjunctiva or amniotic membrane of another area away from the lesion should be used to cover it (transplant). Follow-up observation for about 2 months after surgery to check whether the implanted conjunctival piece or amniotic membrane is correctly implanted.

However, surgery should not be performed for cosmetic purposes in order to reduce congestion and appear clean in the early stages of the disease. No matter how carefully the surgery is performed, the recurrence rate is high enough to be reported at about 10% for the first surgery. It should only be performed if it affects vision.

Professor Kim Yong-chan said, "Expercussion is a typical aging ophthalmic disease that can be completely cured by surgery, and the quality of vision can be improved and discomfort and complications can be reduced only when the correct diagnosis and treatment method are selected"In addition to aging, it is important to control diabetes, which are known risk factors, to make smoking a daily life, and to correct lifestyle habits such as wearing sunglasses in places with strong direct sunlight, such as on the beach in summer."
