"Have experienced oriental medicine treatment, positive for expanding the benefits of oriental medicine loss"
Aug 29, 2024
It was found that those who experienced oriental medicine treatment or knew that oriental doctors participated in the independence movement responded 'positively' to the expansion of oriental medical loss insurance benefits.
This is the main content of the thesis presented at the seminar titled 「Strategy for Strengthening K-medi Competitiveness」 held in the small conference room of the National Assembly Library on the 29th."Awareness on the expansion of oriental medicine treatment loss insurance coverage (Professor Choi Joon-young, Professor Koo Bon-sang, Professor of Chungbuk National University)"
The seminar was co-hosted by Rep. Seo Myung-ok of the People's Power, Rep. Lee In-young of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Hwang Un-ha of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, and sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Korea Oriental Hospital Association, Inha University's Social Science Research Institute, and the Korea Academy of Sciences.
At the seminar, Jang Young-hee, an adjunct professor at Chungnam National University, Shin Min-sik, an outpatient professor at Kyung Hee University, and Nam Chang-hee, a professor at Inha University, presented the theme of "Comparison of Korea-Taiwan Traditional Medicine Development Policy".
The presenters said "Korea's medicine and acupuncture were excluded from health insurance when compared to Taiwan. Along with that, due to the revision of the standard terms and conditions, it is also neglected by real loss insurance. As a result, the environment in which better quality medical services are provided to the public has been restricted. Such an environment should be actively improved," he stressed.
In addition, it is encouraging that a system that compensates for six diseases, including lumbar disc, functional indigestion, menstrual pain, facial nerve palsy, cerebrovascular disease, and rhinitis, is being implemented as a pilot project.
In particular, it is very important to convert the herbal medicine pilot project to the health insurance business, and if the living diseases of the people are added and expanded from the six diseases, the quality of life of the people will be further improved and the foundation for K-medi globalization was also announced.
In addition, Professor Kim Sang-hoon of Inha University, a leading actor in the theme of 「Enhancing the Competitiveness of K-medicine」, cites the strengths of personalized treatment, suitability as primary treatment, self-sustainability, and non-surgical and non-drug therapy. Now, oriental medicine is rapidly evolving in terms of diagnosis and treatment in line with the era of the 4th industrial revolution. Oriental medicine doctors are treating patients by performing blood tests and performing ultrasound in the clinic. Therefore, it should open the way at the government level so that oriental doctors can play a role in the field of essential medical care."
In the future, it is essential to consider ways to utilize oriental medicine when promoting new government projects in the health sector (health care big data, cancer registration, R&D, reinforcement of primary care, exchange of medical information, and integrated care systems). In addition, various oriental medicine pilot projects that combine the advantages of oriental medicine with the needs of the people should be regularized, and education and systems should be reorganized and promoted so that oriental medicine can be used in primary medical care, which is a weak part of Korea's medical system" he stressed.
In addition, Professor Son Young-hwa of Inha University, who presented the theme of 『Activating Medical Tourism through Oriental- Western Cooperation" will promote the development of oriental medicine and the growth of Korean medicine by treating oriental medicine and Western medicine equally within the law and system. Through this, it is expected to contribute to guaranteeing the patient's choice and ultimately improving Korea's status as a leading country in medical tourism," he said.
Then "Among the measures to revitalize medical tourism, cooperation between Korea and the two countries is a very effective strategy. This is because it is possible to provide comprehensive and customized medical services to patients by combining the advantages of the two medicines", he explained.
In addition, there is an urgent need for a strategy to attract many foreign patients by maximizing the treatment effect of patients as well as providing cultural experiences. The collaboration between Western and Oriental medicine provides a unique and effective treatment experience for foreign patients and is expected to contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of medical tourism in Korea."
