Aug 22, 2024

A hospital that safely cares for high-risk mothers and newborns has opened.

Ewha Womans University Medical Center held the opening ceremony of Ewha Mother's Baby Hospital at Woo Bok-hee Art Hall on the first floor of Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital in Gangseo-gu, Seoul on the 22nd.

The opening ceremony was attended by foreign guests such as Jang Myung-soo, chairman of Ewha School, Kim Eun-mi, president of Ewha Women's University, Jin Kyo-hoon, head of Gangseo-gu District Office, Kim Young-tae, chairman of the Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kim Han-seok, the next chairman of the Korean Association of Pediatrics, Yoo Kyung-ha, vice president and medical director of Ewha Womans University, Ha Eun-hee, president of Ewha Womans University Medical School, Kim Han-soo, president of Ewha Mokdong Hospital, Joo Woong, president of Ewha Medical Center, and Yoo Hyun-jung, head of the Korean.

Park Mi-hye, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital, was appointed as the first hospital director of Ewha Womans University's Mother and Baby Hospital. Hospital director Park is an expert in high-risk pregnancy care such as old age and multiple births, and served as a cornerstone for the mother center of Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital to achieve 3,000 deliveries and give birth to her 500th twin in five years after its opening in February.

Centers for intensive care of mothers and babies have also been established. Professor Lee Kyung-ah of obstetrics and gynecology was appointed as the head of the high-risk neonatal intensive care center, Professor Shim So-yeon of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescents, Professor Kim Tae-yoon of Surgery for the head of the obstetrics and gynecology bleeding center, Professor Seo Dong-man of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery for the head of the Baby Surgery Center, and Moon Hyun-sook, head of the Special Nursing Team, for the head of the Edmunds Nursing Education Center.

Ewha Womans University Mother's Baby Hospital will collaborate organically with medical staff from various specialized departments such as pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric thoracic surgery, pediatric radiology, pediatric neurosurgery, and pediatric rehabilitation medicine as well as obstetrics and gynecology for maternal, fetal, and newborn health care.

The hospital room is designed to allow the mother to deliver safely in consideration of the mother's movements. Each bed is equipped with an electronic fetal heart rate device that can monitor the condition of the fetus and the mother, and by checking it in the central system, medical staff have a system to cope with urgent emergencies.

In addition, a labor room, a family delivery room, and a high-risk maternity room have been built in one space, and medical staff provide a one-stop service to prepare for emergencies while constantly monitoring the condition of mothers and fetuses through a central monitoring system. The delivery room is directly connected to the neonatal intensive care unit, and there is close cooperation with the pediatric and adolescent departments on various infections or deformities that may occur in newborns after delivery.

In the neonatal room, medical staff are on hand 24 hours a day to take care of the newborn, and a professor of pediatrics checks the newborn's condition every day and feeds the results back to mothers. It operates a hospital room where mothers and newborns can stay safe and comfortable by operating an access control system that controls access to others except mothers, newborns, guardians, and medical staff.

As the number of mothers with high possibility of obstetric bleeding, such as vestibular placenta, is increasing rapidly, there is an immediate consultation with emergency medicine, radiology, gynecology, and intensive care medicine depending on the stage of postpartum bleeding.

In addition, education for various medical personnel, including CPR for newborns and simulation training for postpartum bleeding, will be conducted through Edmunds Nursing Education Center, and midwives will also be trained as the Ministry of Health and Welfare recently designated it as a midwifery care institution.

Park Mi-hye, the first director of Ewha Womans University Mother's Baby Hospital, said, `The spirit of service and sharing of Bogu Women's Hall, Korea's first women's hospital, which was born in 1887, has spread the hospital's birth culture, and has reached Ewha Mother's Baby Hospital through Lillian Harris Memorial Hospital, Ewha Dongdaemun Hospital, and Ewha Mokdong Hospital.' `I will take over the spirit of Ewha, who took care of mothers and babies carefully and take care of high-risk mothers and newborns as best as possible.'
