'Hospital utilization of ChatGPT expects effectiveness in patient education'

If 'Chat GPT' is used for patient treatment in hospitals, it is expected to be effective in the field of patient education.

A research team led by Roh Kyu-chul, head of the orthopedic surgery hospital at Hallym University's Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital, revealed this in a review paper 'Application of ChatGPT for Orthopedic Surgeons and Patient Care for Patient Treatment. The paper was published in the June issue of the SCIE-level Korean Orthopedic Surgery Association's international journal 'Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery (5.6)'.

ChatGPT is a service that allows users to communicate accordingly when they enter text in a chat window, and can answer questions and perform tasks in a wide range of fields such as writing papers, translating, writing and composing songs, and coding. If ChatGPT is used in the medical field, it is expected that medical staff will be able to quickly access vast amounts of medical information to quickly obtain information on patient treatment.

The research team analyzed 48 previous studies on the use of ChatGPT in hospitals. In the orthopedic field, ChatGPT had the advantage of enabling accurate and safe personalized treatment, such as ▲ fast and accurate diagnosis support ▲ planning and optimization of surgical procedures ▲ improving surgical precision, patient safety, overall recovery ▲ reducing postoperative complications ▲ recording postoperative data.

On the other hand, when the research team asked about complex surgical situations to evaluate the efficacy of ChatGPT, the information generated could be misleading or inaccurate. In addition, effective communication was not achieved because the individual patient's subtle emotional state was not detected. As a result, ChatGPT's response is still difficult to replace expert medical advice or diagnosis.

Despite these limitations, effects are expected in the field of education for patients related to orthopedic surgery. If ChatGPT is used to explain the surgical process, consent to surgery, and follow-up education, it is analyzed that more detailed information can be delivered to patients and caregivers. For example, professional medical terms could be explained in a language that is easy for the general public to understand, helping patients make informed decisions and alleviating vague anxiety before surgery. In addition, by designing a personalized rehabilitation program, it was able to help improve recovery.

Hospital Director Noh Kyu-chul said, "Chat GPT can be an alternative in a situation where there is a real difficulty in which time is insufficient for medical staff to give detailed explanations to all patients in hospitals."If we increase the applicability of ChatGPT through additional training and data purification specialized in orthopedic surgery, we expect its application in various areas"
