Nowadays, varicose veins are cited as a disease to be careful of in the heat wave.

According to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service's statistics on diseases of public interest, varicose veins of the lower extremities had the highest number of patients from July to August every year. The number of patients last year was 407,776, more than doubling from 10 years ago (186,407).

Shin Jong-mok, director of thoracic surgery at Suwon Nanuri Hospital, said "There are a lot of patients with varicose veins in the summer." When our body is exposed to hot weather, blood vessels in the body expand. As a result, venous function is reduced and smooth blood circulation is hindered, but when blood vessels expand, blood in the legs increases, causing pain by compressing surrounding muscles, skin, and nerve tissue."

The varicose vein is a disease caused by the weakening of the walls of the leg veins and the increase of blood vessels due to valve abnormalities. The vein expands and swells like a lump (瘤, bloodstream) and is called 'Vascular', and the cause of the outbreak varies, but typically occurs as the venous walls and intravenous valves weaken and tear as they age. In particular, it appears two to three times more in women.

If this condition persists for a long time, venous pressure increases and the valves that prevent blood flow back are damaged, resulting in varicose veins in the lower extremities. The main symptoms are pain or fatigue in the legs, frequent swelling or severe cramps. Frequent leg cramps do not necessarily mean varicose veins. This is because if you sweat a lot due to excessive exercise or drink alcohol and coffee often, you may have leg cramps due to lack of electrolytes.

However, if the veins appear protruding out of the skin due to frequent cramps in the calves and feet, you can suspect varicose veins. Also ▲My legs hurt even if I exercise for 10 minutes ▲I feel tired even if I walk a little ▲I have pain in my legs ▲I often get bruises on my legs ▲I have blood vessels sticking out ▲ There are eczema or skin ulcers around the ankle If you have symptoms such as back, you need to visit a hospital as soon as possible and consult a specialist.

The treatment of varicose veins is a specialized examination such as Doppler ultrasound and CT lower limb venography to accurately diagnose the disease, from conservative treatment to non-surgical injection treatment such as vasclerosis therapy, laser, venous high frequency, and Venacil. After surgery, bruises, pain, pulling, heat, swelling, etc. may appear. This is a natural symptom of the process of the treated blood vessels being absorbed into the body, so the symptoms disappear within a month or two, and cold compresses and light walking exercises are helpful.

Kim Nam-woo, head of Suwon Nanuri Hospital's Non-Surgical Center, said, `The earlier the varicose veins are detected and managed, the less cost and time it takes to treat them.' `We should refrain from smoking, excessive drinking, and spicy and salty foods that adversely affect blood vessels" he advised.
