According to local media such as Jagran News, a 19-year-old female nursing trainee who was returning home in a motorcycle taxi (autoricksha, tuktuk) in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, western India, was sexually assaulted by a driver on the night of the 25th (local time).
She reportedly lost her mind after drinking water from the driver.
An initial police investigation found that the driver delivered a bottle of water mixed with the drug to the woman.
Later, the driver took the unconscious woman to a remote place and committed the crime.
After waking up, the victim informed her family of the fact and reported it to the police.
Police are looking for suspects by analyzing CCTV and probing witnesses.
Earlier, two kindergarten children were sexually assaulted here in Maharashtra, prompting protests from residents.
Last week, two children in the kindergarten class were sexually assaulted by a 23-year-old man, a school cleaning worker, in the bathroom of a school in Badrapur, Maharashtra.
Since then, about 2,000 people, including the children's parents, families, and residents, have protested in response to lukewarm measures by the police and authorities.
Meanwhile, more than 31,000 sexual assault cases were reported in India in 2022 alone. An average of 85 cases occurred a day.
This is a 20% increase from 2021. However, considering the low number of reports of sexual violence, the actual number of crimes is estimated to be much higher.
