Korea Game Policy Autonomous Organization publishes a white paper summarizing self-regulation of probability-type items

A white paper has been published that summarizes the self-regulation of probability-based items in the domestic game industry.

The Korea Game Policy Autonomous Organization (GSOK) announced on the 19th that it has published its third GSOK policy white paper, 'Probability-type item self-regulation - a history of half of its success'.

This white paper describes the history of self-regulation of probability-based items that are used as major business models in the domestic game industry. The entire process from 2008 when self-regulation was first implemented to March 2024, when self-regulation was completed by government regulation, was highlighted, and the achievements and limitations so far were summarized.

GSOK also explained the meaning and history of probability-based items and the definition and type of self-regulation, and recorded and organized how the probability-based item self-regulation and self-regulation organization operated. In addition, it is characterized by a time series of events from the 2008 self-regulation announcement announced by the Korea Game Industry Association to the 2015 self-regulation expansion plan and the launch of the self-regulation evaluation committee.

In addition, it summarized the controversy and responses that occurred during the self-regulation period along with the progress of self-regulation of probability-type items that were implemented in earnest since the establishment of the Korean Game Policy Self-Regulation Organization in 2018. Finally, it summarized the situation after the legislation and passage of the obligation to disclose probability information, which took effect in March this year, and explained the performance and limitations of the self-regulation and certification system.

Hwang Sung-ki, chairman of the Korean Game Policy Autonomous Organization (Hanyang University Graduate School of Law), said, "This white paper will be an opportunity to examine the history of self-regulation of probability-based items at a glance and to identify the possibilities and improvements of self-regulation. The Korean Game Policy Autonomous Organization will continue to develop self-regulation to lay a sound foundation for the game industry in the future."

The GSOK policy white paper series can be found by anyone on the website of the 「Korea Game Policy Autonomous Organization」.
