A man who forged a record for dying to avoid paying child support has been jailed.

Jesse Keefe, 39, of Somerset, Kentucky, was sentenced to 81 months in prison on charges of computer fraud and aggravated identity theft, according to CNN and Sky News.

It turned out that he committed the crime not to fulfill his unpaid child support obligations. The unpaid child support is known to be about $116,000 (about 160 million won).

According to prosecutors, he obtained the ID and password of a doctor living in another area, accessed the Hawaii government's `Electronic Death Registration System" in January last year, manipulated his death records, and issued a death certificate.

As a result, he was registered as a deceased in various U.S. government databases.

He also tried to access other state registration systems and private networks to steal other people's personal information and sell it on the dark web.

Arrested in November last year, he admitted to manipulating death records to avoid child support payments. He also pleaded guilty to both other charges.

The prosecution emphasized that `it is a clear reminder of how much damage a criminal with a computer can cause and how important computer and online security is to all of us.'

The court sentenced him to 81 months in prison, paid more than $195,000 (about 260 million won) in compensation for damage to the computer system, and paid all child support that was not given.

Court records show he divorced in 2008 and was deployed to Iraq for nearly a year between 2007 and 2008.
