Contemporary American theater master Tony Kirschner's work 'Angels' made its worldwide premiere in 1991, followed by a spectacular Broadway debut in 1993. It deals with discrimination and identity confusion experienced by social minorities such as homosexuals, black people, Jews, Mormons, and AIDS patients ahead of the new millennium and the change of the new era, and is considered a masterpiece by depicting in detail the chaos and anguish experienced by characters with different beliefs such as angels and humans, white conservative patients and black nurses, homosexuals and devout religious people.
"Angels" won the Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Critics Award at the 1993 Broadway premiere, and also swept the revival categories of major awards such as the Tony Award and the Drama League Award after the Broadway revival in 2018. It also gained popularity in the West End, winning nominations for nine Olivier awards and three awards in 1992, 1994 and 2018. It was adapted into an HBO miniseries in 2003 and an opera in 2004, proving the original's popularity.
