It was reported that the number of births recently rebounded. It was good news because the expression 'population cliff' has been at an all-time low to the point where it feels real, but it is expected that a lot of effort will be needed to maintain this upward trend. Accordingly, the government and local governments are actively implementing various support policies for marriage and childbirth, and companies are also active.

The importance of the health of mothers who persevere for a long time for a healthy birth is also increasing. Various policies are being implemented, from health care subsidies to exercise and nutrition management programs. However, it is difficult to fully prepare, and there may be situations in which hospital treatment is required.

In particular, pregnant women who are unable to use public transportation have no choice but to worry about traffic accidents during the holiday season when traffic chaos occurs. Even if it is not a serious injury, this is especially true because there are limitations in drug treatment along with mental stress such as worry and anxiety about the health of the fetus.

Among them, Kyung Da-hyun, a research team at the Spinal Joint Research Institute of Jaseng Oriental Medicine Hospital, published a paper on the effectiveness and safety of oriental medicine treatment for pregnant women who suffered traffic accidents in the SCI(E)-level international academic journal 'Medicine (IF=1.6)'. As a result of the study, the pain and function of pregnant women who received oriental medical treatment, including acupuncture, improved significantly, and treatment satisfaction was also high.

The research team of Kyung Da-hyun Oriental Medicine analyzed the effectiveness of oriental medicine treatment based on data from 126 pregnant women among traffic accident patients who visited Daejeon Jaesaeng Oriental Medicine Hospital from January 2018 to April 2022. Long-term follow-up was conducted after treatment, and a total of 50 patients responded to the questionnaire.

First of all, the areas where the most patients complained of pain were the neck and back. Patients chose neck and waist as the top priority, followed by headaches, knee, and shoulder pain. Accordingly, the integrated treatment of oriental medicine was carried out considering the constitution and detailed symptoms of the patients. Acupuncture, cupping, and percutaneous infrared treatments were performed in most patients, and more than 50% of them were combined with pre-acupuncture and herbal acupuncture, including Chuna therapy. Herbal medicine was also prescribed at a similar rate in hospitalized and outpatients.

As a result of follow-up after the end of treatment, significant improvements were observed in each evaluation index, such as NRS (0-10), NDI (0-100), and ODI (back, 0-100), which measure neck and back pain.

Neck pain NRS was severe with an average of 5.35 before treatment, but decreased to about a third with a normal level of 1.54. Lumbar pain NRS was likewise significantly reduced from an average of 5.62 to 1.38. In addition, the NDI improved by about 64% from 31.8 to 11.40 and the ODI improved by 89% from 30.05 to 3.27. EQ-5D-5L, which evaluates changes in quality of life, also confirmed that symptoms including pain improved close to normal levels.

Satisfaction with treatment was also high. As a result of the PGIC evaluation, which evaluates treatment satisfaction, 86% of patients responded that their symptoms improved. In addition, 98% of patients felt that their daily life became more comfortable after treatment. In the results of examining symptoms during pregnancy and health problems of newborns after childbirth, it was similar to the proportion of general pregnant women, and no significant side effects were found from treatment.

Kyung Da-hyun, an oriental medicine doctor, said "This study confirmed that oriental medicine treatment effectively reduces pain and symptoms in pregnant women caused by traffic accidents."We hope that more studies on the safety of integrated oriental medicine treatment will be conducted in the future, helping pregnant women manage their health."
