A graduate of a prestigious Chinese university was caught stealing money by changing the QR code in the temple donation box to his own.

According to Chinese media, including the Sihwa Ilbo, a man was seen replacing a QR code attached to a donation box on CCTV at a temple in Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, China.

He attached his QR code instead and stole money donated by visitors. The amount of damage is not known, but the police quickly suspended the payment.

Caught by police, he has obtained a master's degree in law from a prestigious university, and has previously committed similar crimes in Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces, stealing donations of more than 30,000 yuan.

Police will contact the affected temple to return the amount of damage and are investigating whether there have been any other additional crimes.

The police asked "Other temples to do their best to manage QR codes" and "Visitors should carefully check who they receive when making donations."

Netizens are responding, such as "It's a waste of good brains", "The merchants should be careful too", and "There will be much more damage that has not been revealed".
