Professor Kim Sung-jae of Ophthalmology at Gyeongsang National University Hospital (Hospital Director Ahn Sung-ki) won the best academic award at the regular academic conference of the Korean Society of Lepidermoid Fracture (KSCRS) held on July 13-14.

The theme of this grand prize is the role of CSPG5 in steroid-induced complicated cataract (The role of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan 5 in steroid-induced cataract)', and the paper is published in Cells, 2023, 12, 1705.

Cataract is a major disease that 30% of the world's population suffers from, and cataract surgery is currently the most performed operation in Korea.

Cataracts are caused by aging, diabetes, trauma, and steroid use, among which steroids are a type of immunosuppressant and are used as treatments for rheumatoid diseases, autoimmune diseases, and chronic obstructive respiratory diseases.

In particular, as modern society enters an aging society, the number of steroid drug prescriptions is increasing, and if patients use these steroids for a long time, cataracts and glaucoma occur as eye complications.

In general, cataracts caused by steroid use cause vision loss in the early stages, and patients feel a lot of discomfort due to the phenomenon of 'main blindness' with lower vision during the day.

In addition, steroid-induced cataracts can commonly cause complications such as lens dislocation or rupture of the posterior sac during surgery, so it is the best way to prevent them.

Professor Kim Sung-jae confirmed that the expression of CSPG5 increased by analyzing the anterior cyst of the lens acquired during surgery in steroid-induced cataracts patients, and suggested a new mechanism that regulating transcription factors through cell experiments can prevent cataracts by lowering the expression of CSPG5, and won the grand prize in recognition of its achievements.

Professor Kim Sung-jae said, "As a result of this study, it is expected that it will be possible to develop a treatment to prevent cataract in patients who are prescribed steroids for various diseases" he said.
