If symptoms of shoulder pain or arm numbness appear in the middle-aged in their 40s and 50s, most of them suspect a shoulder disease called frozen shoulder. However, shoulder pain is not just a symptom of frozen shoulders, but there is also a possibility of neck disease, so caution is needed.

Since the shoulder and neck are connected bodies, it is not easy to distinguish between the frozen shoulder and the neck disc by simple shoulder pain, and symptoms may look similar, but the causes and treatments that occur are clear.

Neck disc refers to a disease in which the disc between the neck bones escapes from the normal range due to trauma or old age and compresses the nerves, causing pain or deterioration of function. Above all, unlike before, which was a part of old age, the age group of patients complaining of neck disease, including neck disc, is gradually decreasing due to excessive use of smartphones.

Director Jeong Seung-young of Juan Nanuri Hospital's Spine Center said, `Most patients think of neck disc symptoms only as neck pain or stiffness, but in fact, depending on the location of the lesion, various symptoms such as shoulder to wing bone, arm pain and numbness may appear"As a result of these symptoms, middle-aged people often mistake it for frozen shoulder rather than neck disc, so they often miss important treatment periods."

The shoulder pain is the main symptom, and it is difficult to raise or tilt the arm back, and the night pain is severe, whereas the neck disc shows neck pain and upper limb radiating pain that extends from both shoulders to the arm. For this reason, delicate movements such as chopsticks, button filling, and sewing may be difficult.

Among the vertebrae, the neck, consists of a total of seven bones, and the most stimulated part in using the neck is the lower part, cervical vertebrae 4 through 7. In fact, it is known that the multiple expression sites of the neck disc are also large in cervical vertebrae 5th, 6th, and 7th.

If the symptoms of neck disc are early, non-surgical treatment such as medication, exercise therapy, and posture correction can improve the symptoms, but if serious symptoms such as arm or finger numbness occur, surgical treatment such as spinal endoscopy using minimal invasion should be considered.

Unlike conventional spinal surgery, which is performed with large-scale incisions, vertebral endoscopy is a surgical method that precisely removes the lesion area by inserting an endoscope and surgical tools of less than 5mm. Since it is performed with a minimum incision method, there are few scars left, and damage to surrounding tissues can be minimized, so a quick recovery can be expected.

Director Jung Seung-young said "A neck disc should be treated and maintained a normal life."It is important not to bend your head excessively when using a smartphone, and to keep your neck healthy by relaxing your stiff muscles and ligaments through stretching around your neck and shoulders."
