Three out of 10 COVID-19 vaccines have been discarded after their expiration date.

According to the data submitted by Baek Jong-heon (People's Power, Geumjeong-gu, Busan) of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 216.79 million doses have been introduced from 2021 to August 2024, of which 28.6% or 61.97 million doses have been discarded.

In addition, 141.81 million doses were used for inoculation and 10.24 million doses were donated abroad.

As of August this year, the distribution center had 2.77 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and there were no supplies held by inoculation institutions.

To date, the largest number of reasons for disposal of 61.97 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine was 61.6 million doses.

Then, 290,000 unused doses were found to be followed by 40,000 doses of vaccine temperature deviation and damage to vaccine containers following the end of vaccination.

Representative Baek Jong-heon emphasized that "As the resurgence of COVID-19 is increasing public anxiety, we should monitor the mutation situation and pay special attention to the quantity by grasping the expiration date of the vaccine so that COVID-19 vaccination for high-risk groups such as the elderly or underlying patients can be facilitated."
