A woman in her 20s was sentenced to life in prison after her two-year-old son shot and killed her four-year-old sister.

According to CTV, CBS News and other U.S. media, Shawnee County District Court in Kansas sentenced Marianne Belair, 24, to life in prison on the 20th (local time) on charges of child abuse and first-degree murder. He also said he was not eligible for parole until he served 25 years.

According to prosecutors, Belair pulled a loaded 9mm pistol from his diaper bag and placed it on the sofa next to him when he was at home with his 4-year-old daughter, his 2-year-old son, and his 1-year-old daughter.

Before the verdict, Belair told the court that he was planning to go out with the children to buy food at the time, so he pulled out his pistol in the process of making sure he had everything to pack in his bag.

It was a distracting situation, with his 4-year-old daughter asking him to take a picture of her cell phone" he pleaded.

Prosecutor "The gun lay on the couch at least 12 minutes before his soon-to-be-three son shot his sister""If you were a rational person, you wouldn't have left the gun in the presence of young children for so long" he pointed out."

After the incident, the police searched her house and found guns and drugs," he added.

Belair said he was set to appeal the court's sentence.
