Aug 07, 2024

On the 7th, Rep. Seo Mi-hwa of the Democratic Party of Korea held a press conference at the press conference hall of the National Assembly Communication Center at 3 p.m. to urge the recognition of type 1 diabetes.

The press conference was hosted by Rep. Seo Mi-hwa and co-hosted by Roh Woong-rae (former secretary-general of the Democratic Party of Korea) and Lee Myung-soo (former chairman of the National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee).

Lawmaker Seo Mi-hwa said, "Type 1 diabetes is a permanent damage that causes the pancreas to fail to make insulin in the body, so even though it is actually a disability, it has been supported only by reducing medical costs so far""If you fail to adequately respond to sudden changes in blood sugar that do not remain silent 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, you will lose your life, accompanied by unimaginable pain and discomfort for type 1 diabetics and their families.""

Subsequently, Seo strongly urged the government to recognize the disability of type 1 diabetes, saying, `Considering the extreme pain and inconvenience that causes the patients and their families to give up their daily lives, the disability of type 1 diabetes can no longer be postponed.'

Former lawmaker Noh Woong-rae has been working hard to pass the "Revision of the School Health Act" to minimize inconvenience such as insulin administration for young type 1 diabetic patients attending elementary, middle and high schools, and has been paying attention to changing the present and future of our children by continuously participating in various policy promotion and demonstration processes of the Korean Diabetes Association""We need a more essential approach so that everyone with type 1 diabetes is socially shunned and free."," he said, calling for a lot of policy attention.

Former lawmaker Lee Myung-soo said, "A bill that was released from the National Assembly but was hoped to be dealt with during his time in the National Assembly is a bill on support for children, adolescents, and young people with diabetes. We should support children's diabetes at the national level."He emphasized the importance and urgency. In addition, he urged the bill to be passed early, appealing that "the recognition of type 1 diabetes disorder is an important way to approach the hardships of patients and families comprehensively and systematically."

Park Seok-oh, director of social contribution at the Korean Diabetes Association, expressed his medical opinion on the recognition of type 1 diabetes disorders, focusing on the definition of disability and the need for disability definition.

Director Park said, "Type 1 diabetes meets the requirements of disability set by the World Health Organization (WHO) with the pancreas completely broken and almost no insulin secretion capacity, and medical matters are not a problem in recognizing type 1 diabetes as a disorder." he said.

Focusing on the characteristics of Type 1 diabetes, the insurance director of the Korean Society of Endocrinology, Kim Dae Jung, said, "Type 1 diabetes children in socially disadvantaged groups become a social disease because they have problems that require hemodialysis due to poor eyes or kidneys in their 20s due to poor management. "The social starting point of having a system to support and care for the weak in every way, including daily life, school life, and career choice, is to recognize Type 1 diabetes as a disability."

Kim Kwang-hoon, CEO of the Korean Diabetes Association, said, `Since 2005, the Korean Pediatric Diabetes Association, the Korean Diabetes Association, and the Korean Pediatric Endocrine Society have tried to register type 1 diabetes as a rare, severe, and incurable disease, but have been repeatedly rejected on the grounds that the number of patients registered exceeds 20,000"Pancreatic disorders are not registered as disabilities", he pointed out. He then emphasized the necessity of registration of disability by holding five debates on diabetes, and by making pledges in the 2022 presidential election and the 2024 general election"With this press conference, we will speed up the registration of type 1 diabetes as a pancreatic disorder.
