With the closing of the 2024 Paris Olympics approaching, a study has found that just watching sports games can consume calories.

A research team at Loughborough University in East Midlands, England, claimed that watching a 90-minute full-time game for soccer fans can burn up to 540 calories.

According to the British media Daily Star, a research team led by sports scientist Dr. Dale Esslinger created a formula called 'Selving Power' and substituted it into the study.

In this formula, calorie burning was defined as being affected by five main factors: weight, how to watch sports, reference time, cheering intensity, and cheering duration.

The study found that football fans can burn up to 540 calories if they watch a full 90-minute game while doing a variety of activities, such as tossing and turning and responding to goals or tackles.

In addition, up to 432 calories can be burned if tennis fans sit down and talk and often clap while watching a three-hour match, which is equivalent to swimming for an hour, the researchers explained.

In the case of track and field fans, they can burn 162 calories by sitting and cheering for an hour and shouting along the name of their favorite athlete.

Dr. Eslinger says watching sports has a positive connection to wellbeing and vitality. Caloric consumption may vary depending on the way you watch and the intensity of your support,' he said.
