An academy instructor who sexually harassed an elementary school student was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

However, the statement of a lawyer with nuance that the victim's clothes caused sexual assault has caused further anger.

According to foreign media such as the Straits Times, on the 28th of last month, the Singapore High Court maintained the original trial, which sentenced a 50-year-old academy instructor A (male) to 16 months in prison for sexual harassment of minors.

According to the ruling, A, an English instructor at the academy, was found to have touched the chest, thigh, and crotch of the victim, who was 10 years old at the time, and kissed the neck in December 2018. The girl informed her father, who reported it to the police.

The victim was wearing a pink dress at the time when the instructor reached into the clothes and touched his chest, he told the court.

However, the instructor denied the allegations of sexual harassment, saying that he only patted the victim on the shoulder and encouraged her.

The district court, which was the first trial, convicted the lecturer and sentenced him to 14 months in prison and an additional two months in lieu of imprisonment.

Later, at the appeal trial, the instructor's lawyer argued that the victim's statements were inconsistent.

The lawyer pointed out that the victim initially said in a police investigation that he only wore a pink dress, but further investigation changed his words, saying he was wearing a black top inside.

He emphasized that it is important to know the details of the clothes involved in the sexual harassment case.

The High Court shall speak carefully so as not to suggest that the victim's clothing instigated the assault, although the question of clothing may be relevant" he warned.

The court then sentenced the lower court to 16 months in prison.
