A boarding school in China has been criticized for punishing a student who used a bathroom at night.

According to Chinese media such as Huarong Network and NetEase News, a teenage boy attending a secondary school in Hualien, Shaanxi Province, was caught by a faculty member while going to the bathroom at around 11:10 p.m. The student received a stern warning from the school, was deducted 5 points from the class moral education evaluation score, and at his own expense, he printed 1,000 copies of his reflection and distributed them to each class, dormitory, and office.

The school's regulations state that students cannot go to the bathroom or move at will, except in special circumstances, from lights off until 11:40 p.m.

Students who have to use the bathroom during curfew should contact the dormitory manager for permission.

In a letter of apology, the student wrote, "I seriously violated the school rules, and going to the bathroom in the evening not only interfered with other students' sleep, but also brought shame to my class," he wrote.

He also sincerely apologizes to his classmates and school, saying, `I will not repeat this behavior in the future," he added.

The school described the regulations as "a provision created to prohibit other students from obstructing their sleep and smoking.""

As the controversy grew, the competent education authorities disciplined the school director and ordered correction. I also asked the student to refund the printing fee of 100 yuan.

Authorities have instructed all schools to implement reasonable and humane disciplinary policies to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
