Yudichwa will hold Gong Sung-mi's solo exhibition 'Rising Above: Rising' at the Udy Gallery until the 25th of this month.
UD Gallery is an independent space in the dental clinic (Gangnam Bang Bang branch of UD Dental Hospital), which started in 2010, and is receiving positive response as a cultural benefit that patients can use during waiting time. In addition, UD Gallery holds regular exhibitions as a cultural and social contribution project to provide artists with opportunities to exhibit.
Gong Sung-mi, who is hosting this solo exhibition, majored in painting and Korean painting at Dongduk Women's University, represents the Rainbow Studio Gallery in Ontario, Canada, and represents the Rainbow Roof Gallery Non-profit Art Foundation. He has conducted a number of individual and group exhibitions, and has continued to reinterpret the charm of traditional Korean colored paintings in a modern way between Canada and Korea.
Gong Sung-mi expresses beautiful and sophisticated modern Korean painting by using traditional pigments such as Bunchae and Seokchae on Korean paper, Korea's representative paper. It mainly uses hand-made Korean paper, and in this process, clear colors are stacked thinly through several layers of brush. The unique spread of water and subtle color, in which the pigment permeates the Korean paper and dries again, add depth to the work. The main feature of the work is the subtle change created by the combination of Korean paper and pigments.
In addition, exhibitions are held with artists from various countries to promote the unique charm of Korean paper internationally. The fish in the work symbolizes time, relationships, opportunities, and the importance of ordinary daily life, and explores these themes through oriental aesthetics. Through this, it is focusing on conveying the beauty of Korean tradition with a modern sense by arousing visitors' reflection and appreciation of the precious things in daily life.
