As outdoor activities increase in autumn, bruises or joint injuries often occur.

In particular, in the case of young children, even if they are seemingly simple bruises, they may actually be shocked by their joints, and there is a possibility that they may injure their growth plates, so various trauma should not be passed lightly.

With the help of Min Jae-jeong, a professor of pediatric orthopedic surgery at Eulji University Hospital in Daejeon, we summarized the characteristics of childhood bones and how to cope with safety accidents.

◇What is the difference between adult bones and pediatric bones

There are three major differences in childhood bones compared to adult bones. The first is 'flexibility'. If the bones of an adult are as hard as glass, the bones of a child are as flexible as a taffy stick placed in a warm place for a while. Professor Min Jae-jeong explained, `In the case of children, bones can be broken easily even with a light impact, and childhood fractures are usually broken in two rather than broken into several pieces.'

Secondly, the periosteum of children is much stronger than that of adults. The periosteum is a membrane that wraps around the bone, protecting the bone and supplying blood to the bone. The periosteum of an adult is very thin, like a plastic bag, while the periosteum of a child is very thick and tough, like leather. Therefore, it is not common for childhood fractures to be severely misaligned by the protection of the periosteum.

Third, the bones of children continue to grow. There is one growth plate at each end of the child's bones. The growth plate gradually disappears by the time of puberty, so when the bones of children are aligned to some extent, they grow and remodel close to normal. Therefore, pediatric fractures often progress only with Gibbs treatment instead of surgery.

◇ When your arm is out 'Hurry up to the emergency room'

In children under the age of 3, arm dislocation accidents are common. One example that can be easily seen around is that when parents hold and lift a child's arm one by one, the child falls off the ground with his feet resting on the parent's arm, and the arm falls out well. This is because the elbow joint ligament is weak.

When you are young, it is difficult to explain your symptoms in words, but you can usually express it as a dislike of moving your arms. If you lose your arm, you can't lift it Because I feel tremendous pain. On the outside, one shoulder can look down and drooping.

In this case, you should visit a nearby emergency room and re-adjust the dislocated joint. After matching, the movement of lifting the arm becomes natural without pain.

Professor Min Jae-jeong emphasized, `If the child continues to feel pain for more than a day or still has problems using his arm, the joint may not have fully returned to its place or other problems such as fractures may have occurred, so he should visit the hospital again as soon as possible.'

◇"Fix your ankle for 4 weeks" when you have a sprained ankle

An ankle sprain accidents, called 'sprains', usually occur after the upper grades of elementary school. As the weight increases and the intensity of sports activities such as soccer and basketball increases, the probability of occurrence also increases.

When a child has an ankle sprain, it is usually given a cast or an ankle protector. The problem revealed here is 'persistence'. After a few days of injury, it is easy to carry around and it is not a hassle to keep wearing it, so it is often left loose.

However, you must fix your ankle for four weeks. Professor Min Jae-jeong "You need to fix your ankle well so that your ligament can heal normally without stretching it."If the ligament heals while being stretched, it can sometimes lead to a chronic recurrence sprain that easily sprains and falls."

◇When the growth plate is damaged 'Periodic follow-up observation'

The most common growth plate damage is the growth plate fracture. However, fractured growth plates do not necessarily cause aftereffects. It is considered to grow well without aftereffects with a probability of two-thirds. Even if growth disorders occur and cause left and right asymmetry, if the degree is not severe, they may stay without any treatment.

However, it can lead to permanent growth impairment in approximately 5 to 10% of cases. When the growth plate is damaged, hard bone tissue called '骨' interferes with growth. Because of this, bones do not grow straight and bend, and the degree of bending or shortening increases over time. In this case, osteoclasts may be considered to remove osteoclasts and transplants chondrocytes or fat.

Professor Min Jae-jeong advised "In the case of leg bones, if there is a difference of more than 2cm after growth is completed, surgery to adjust the length may be necessary, so it is recommended to undergo periodic follow-up observation when the growth plate is damaged."
