A small and medium-sized company in China could lose more than 5.6 billion won by accidentally marking the wrong price on some washing machines.

According to Chinese media Red Star News and Hong Kong media South China Morning Post, electronics company Little Swan recently placed more than 40,000 orders for washing machines online in about 20 minutes. It was because one employee marked it at a ridiculously low selling price.

The original prices per unit were 1,699 yuan (about 320,000 won) and 2,499 yuan (about 470,000 won) for each model, but the prices shown were 299 yuan (about 60,000 won) and 439 yuan (about 80,000 won), respectively.

As a result, the company was estimated to reach 30 million yuan (about 5.655 billion won).

The management explained that "an employee's mistake in misunderstanding the preferential rules of the shopping website Tmall".

"We know that we have seriously disrupted consumers and the market, and we offer our deepest apologies," it said.

At the same time, he requested that the order be withdrawn.

The female employee who caused the mistake also complained in an SNS video that "I realized the mistake after 20 minutes" "Even if I sell my entire property, I can't afford the loss."

A local legal expert said "If a company intentionally misstates prices to gain online visibility or increase sales, the company is obliged to comply with the order. However, on the contrary, if the price is due to an error, the company can petition the court to invalidate the purchase agreement, which allows it to refund customers without having to ship the goods."

It added that "only by presenting compelling evidence proving that the company has made a genuine mistake will the court be able to rule in favour of canceling the purchase agreement"."

Local market regulators are investigating the cause of the store's mispricing.
