'Maratang and Tanghulu' franchise violated 238 cases of food hygiene laws for 5 years'Chicken brand'Most'

It has been revealed that 238 malatang and tanghulu franchises, which have recently become popular among the MZ generation, have been caught for violating the Food Sanitation Act in the past five years.

According to a report submitted by Rep. Seo Mi-hwa (Democratic Party of Korea, Health and Welfare Committee member) from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the total number of violations of the Food Sanitation Act by 10 top franchises of chicken, hamburger, tteokbokki, pizza, malatang, and tanghulu reached 2,583 from 2019 to June 2024.

The number of violations of the Food Sanitation Act for restaurant franchises rose 26% from 444 in 2019 to 560 in 2023. By year, ▲444 cases in 2019, ▲408 cases in 2020, ▲419 cases in 2021, ▲524 cases in 2022, ▲560 cases in 2023, and ▲228 cases in June 2024, increasing every year since 2021.



By food type, chicken had the highest number of violations of the Food Sanitation Act with 1,155 cases (44.7%), followed by ▲ 548 cases (21.2%), ▲ Tteokbokki 358 cases (13.9%), ▲ Pizza 284 cases (11%), ▲ Maratang 219 cases (8.5%), and ▲ Tanghulu 19 cases (0.7%).

By type of violation, 1,008 cases (39%) of 'violation of standards and standards' were the most common cases of foreign substances in food, ▲ 641 cases (24.8%), ▲ 294 cases (11.4%) of violations of sanitary handling standards, ▲ 214 cases (8.3%) of not conducting health examinations, and ▲ 175 cases (6.8%) of violations of business compliance.



However, administrative disposition for this is lightly carried out with 2,253 cases (87.2%) of fines and corrective orders. Administrative measures are being taken in the order of ▲ fine imposition of 1,149 (44.5%), ▲ correction order of 1,104 (42.7%), ▲ suspension of business 155 (6%), ▲ fine of 103 (4%), ▲ facility renovation order of 71 (2.7%), and ▲ office closure (0%).

Rep. Seo Mi-hwa said, `Whenever new trends such as Maratangfuru and Yoa-jeong arise, restaurant franchises are created, and the government needs thorough management and supervision to prevent violations of the Food Sanitation Act from occurring in the process.' He then emphasized that `In order to protect the food safety of the people, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and local governments should strengthen crackdowns and punishments, and the franchise headquarters should also take responsibility for hygiene guidance.'
